You listen to the doctor since that is who YOU owe. Simply, cash the $80 check from the insurance company and pay $80 to the dentist. You got 'free' dental services (after insurance). Why would you even think you should get free dental PLUS make a profit???

If you're confused about the payment from the insurance company, call them and ask them to explain it to you. If the dentist says you owe $80 and the insurance company sent you $80, it seems pretty straightforward however. The insurance company isn't going to pay you $50 for going to the dentist.
Answer
I add the following:
Your 'deal' was solely with dentist to provide service(s) to you. The 'deal' was, it was going to cost you $80. That is whether you have insurance or not.... your COST is $80.
You have a separate 'deal' to provide insurance coverage for dental services you received. They have reimbursed you the $80 that you are obligated to pay (to the dentist).
The insurance company has no authority to set the dentist bill.
Pay the dentist the $80 you owe.... or the dentist will likely pursue collection action against you. Seems pretty simple to me.
Answer
This all depends on if the plan is a indemnity or if not, then if it was in network or out of network - plus who filed the paperwork.
From what you say, it's an indemnity. That means you take the 80 dollar check from the insurance company and pay the dentist with that money.
Answer
There isn't enough information to make a determination as to the type of insurance the OP has. The only thing that is certain is the insurance company is not going to give him 50.00 for going to the dentist.
Call your insurance company.

This sort of stuff just KILLS me..... I love how people think that their insurance carrier is going to PAY THEM to go to the doctor/dentist.
I just freaking LOVE it! I see it every day.
Look, OP - you MUST give that $$ to the dentist who cleaned your teeth.
That is NOT YOUR money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish someone would pay me to go see the doctor. that'd be my new full time job!!!
