Carpenter, age 26, with back problems that cost him his trade. Per doctors Brett cannot work as carpenter any longer. Scoliosis (never found by pediatrician), severe arthritis, plus some kind of nerve thing causes terrible pain and occasional loss of control of legs. They cannot find something that can be cured with surgery. The union permitted him to pay his own insurance as long as they could, then it went to Cobra at $847 per month. He does work in an office, nearly full time at $15/hour. Good wages for many but not sufficient to support himself and pay Cobra or, for that matter, to pay for medication required.
1) Are there any agencies, studies, or support groups who may advise?
2) Are there any possibilities for health insurance not so expensive?
He works for his father who is willing to purchase insurance but Brett must pay for ALL of it, and that is slightly higher than Cobra. That is not an option. Insurance through employment is, as far as I know, his only protection against the pre-existing clause and until this is resolved there is no option but to pay for Cobra.
Any advice would be appreciated as funds are run out . . .

Check with your state's department of insurance. If you can't find anything there, try a search engine to see if there are other options.
