If You Could ReDo the Cards in your wallet..

Question
What would you carry? Which credit cards? Along the same lines, which banks would you use?
Am looking for a new bank after 9 years with BofA.
As far as CCs, I would carry each of the main 3.
Amex: I am very satisfied with Amex plat's customer service and end of year summaries.
Mastercard: The UBS Platinum Mastercard seems on par w/ the Amex offerings or Citi's Chairmen.
Visa: Have not looked into Visa's yet (Merrill Lynch Visa+ looks promising)
Non-private Bank: HSBC possibly.

Answer
i wish from the time i opened a bank account that i would have looked for a debit card/bank account that earned miles or rewards...after 6 years with BofA i switched a few months ago to citi's aadvantage debit card...some ppl like it some dont, ive managed to build up 15,000 miles since december...
also...i recently had my BofA visa plat switched out for their signature card, i have yet to use any of the services such as concierge, but its a visa signature card with no fee and figured i couldnt be going wrong, i wanted to keep this account open as it was my longest standing credit card account

Answer
I would continue to carry the following:
1. Merrill+
2. DL Platinum AMEX
3. AMEX Platinum
4. Diners Club
5. Citi Dividend (for my better half)
I would (and may) drop the following cards:
a. Discover
b. Capital One
c. AAdvantage World MC
d. Citigroup Chairman (with Merrill+ and AMEX Platinum I am not sure that this card still has much value to me)
I may add the following if my spending increased:
- SPG Amex
- HHonors AMEX (I converted mine to a DL Amex)
- Citi Premier Pass or Platinum AMEX (for Entree)
- Citi HHonors Visa Signature (for Visa Signature offers)

Answer

Try going through card offers. http://www.cardoffers.com/introCreditCards/directory/cards/details/card.asp?id=1272
the card is taken off the BoA site but is still available thru card offers. I got it by calling their CC dept.

its the same card as in the link in the post above, its the world points visa signature...i found it originally by browesing the visa site, if u click the apply now on the visa signature page of visa.com it will take u to a list of cards by providers...as mentioned this card is not currently anywhere on bofa.com -- i simply called customer service and asked them to upgrade me which they did with no problem
here is the link on visa.com listing all visa signature cards - scroll down to bank of america:
http://www.usa.visa.com/personal/cards/credit/visa_signature_apply.html?it=c|/personal/cards/credit/visa_signature.jsp|Apply%20Now
and here is the link from the visa page that goes directly to the application:
https://wwwa.applyonlinenow.com/USCCapp/Ctl/entry?mc=A000001ULX&sc=LN43
if you already have a BofA visa that is just a standard gold or platinum card i would reccomend calling customer service to see if you can upgrade so that you can retain your account history
please note--in a thread started yesterday there was news release posted about the introduction of visa signature preferred for people who spend over 50k on the card, if you fit that profile i would inquire to see if there is any news

I do focus my spending. Most of the cards are for benefits.

You should carry at least one card from a different bank. If Citi sees any transactions that they do not like, they may temporarily shutdown all of your accounts.

Answer
Sorry for thread crapping can any one suggest a decent citi card? I have the Premier pass (no fee version) and AA advantage (planing to junk it once the miles are in). Between my amex plat & UA MP visa, there are hardly any charges that will be placed on the card. I just want to have an open account with citi. So i guess my question is, if there any other citi card that is better than the PP card, esp when you donot plan to use it. I generally end up flying UA/US all the time (delta once a while) locally and internationally (cheapest :p ). Thanks.

Frankly I have not found other citi cards with really enticing benefits besides Chairman. However, the following cards may be useful according to your personal situation:
- Citi AMEX cards - These cards come with Entre. See Chairman threads for information
- Citi AA cards - Reduced mileage awards
- HH Visa Signature - Free card with Visa Signature benefits
Other than that, I do not see real benefit in keeping a Citicard without spending on it.

I already have 3-4 Visa signature cards .... so I ended up gettting the Citi Platinum Amex card. Thanks for your suggestions. I guess you are right citi does not have any good sock drawer cards :D ... More i see Chase seems to be the king of rewards cards now a days with UA, CO, most hotels, apparently even the new Amtrak card! BoA & Citi seem to be on the decline.

Answer
Chase Cash Plus Rewards (5% on Groceries, Gas, Drugstores, yearly cap)
Citi mtvU (5% on Restaurants, Movies, Bookstore)
Fidelity Investment Rewards (1.5% on everything... or if I could go back in time, I would get the Fidelity 529 2% grandfathered)
Pentagon Federal Credit Union (5% on Gas, 1.25% everything else)
AMEX Starwood Preferred Guest (can you still get greater than 2% return from hotel stays?) or AMEX Costco TrueEarnings (2% travel)
Runner Up: Citi PremierePass Elite if the annual fee was waived. (2% on everything using flightpoints)

Answer
This is what I have:
Citi MtvU
Citi PPE
Citi Drivers Edge
What's the benefit of having a visa signature card if you already have a MC with concierge? Anyone know off hand, I'm curious if it would make sense to get one.

There are some special offers that are only applicable to Visa Platinum and/or Visa Signature customers. Go to www.visasignature.com for more details. These offers have nothing to do with the card issuer. They are deals for Visa card holders.
Also, you should carry a card from another issuer. If Citi detects some activity that they do not like or understand, they may shutdown all of your cards. It has nothing to do with your payment history. Their security systems monitor for anomalies or what they deem to be strange transactions.

Actually I think that Citi offers decent rewards via PP Elite and Chairman. The issue is that the Citi cards do not offer exceptional benefits. The only US cards that provide non-routine benefits like status, qualifying miles, emergency services, discounts, etc. are:
AMEX Green/Gold/Platinum/Centurion
AMEX SPG
AMEX HH
AMEX DL Platinum
Diners Club/Carte Blanche
Merrill+ Visa
Saks World Elite MC
UBS AMEX/Visa Signature
Chase Marriott Rewards Visa Signature (2 versions)
There may be a few others, but I only have familiarity with these.

Once my whirl wind travel gets done by the end of june, I plan to just keep 3 cards!
SPG Amex - most spending
Amex One - mostly for the easy savings account (makes me feel like saving a little!) & amex waived the fee over the last 2 years so... :D
Merrill+ Visa - where Amex is not accepted + Emergency [low APR]
I plan to get rid off a host of cards: Amex plat, optima plat, Blue cash, BoA visa Sig, citi AA, Chase UA sig, chase CO MC, Sony Store, Some generic VISA (from citizens bank era)! Hopefully this should simplify my life!
