Citi Changing the 20k bonus program?

Question
Just got a new email (todays anyway) trying to get me to sign up for the Citi through AA. Looks like they are upping the $250 requirement and adding the 4 month criteria. Perhaps churners are having an effect?
Here is the new deal...
20,000 AAdvantage® bonus miles after $750 in purchases within four months of becoming a Citi cardmember1
No annual fee for the first 12 months2
Free Companion Certificate3
$50 Off Certificate on a future American Airlines flight4
Jim

Answer
Since you can hold more than one MC at a time, the time limit shouldn't have any effect imo...

Answer
or you can just spend $750 in the first month:D

Answer
I just saw this too. I don't mind so much -- it'll just be more to put on the card early on. As long as they keep allowing bonuses, I'm happy!

Answer
I got my card last month before this change.
Will I have to spend the $750 or the $250 that was in effect when I got the card??

Answer
Has anyone ever successfully used the companion cert that comes with these? I've never found them useful since there are so many restrictions.

Answer
I tried to use a BOGO cert a month or 2 ago. They are based on the higher rate class of service fares than what you can find online (for example). So it was cheaper to buy 2 non-refundable tix online than to use the buy-one (more expensive) get one free cert. Also, they are restricted to flights that are more undesirable (early/late flight times, multiple connections, etc). That's based on my personal experience, yours may vary. In the end, didn't use the certificate buy flew NW revenue instead.

Answer
$250/20000miles =1.25 c per mile
$750/20000miles = 3.75 c per mile
you can buy miles online at a cost of 2.75 c per mile with a max of 40k per yr...
new cc offer is a horrible deal if you ask me...looks like no churning anymore for me.....

Answer
I think you need to re-calculate your figures:
Cost of 20,000 AA miles after spending $250 OR $750 is .......drum roll please......... ZERO !!!!!!!!!!
You would be spending the $250 OR $750 anyway - be it on food, restaurants, hotels, cable TV, car insurance - whatever.
The 20,000 comes as a TOTALLY FREE BONUS for simply using the particular card.

I could not understand your post until I read where you went to school.

Answer
The cost is not quite zero, but close.
It's lost opportunity: with Citi TYN cards I get a minimum of 2% cash back. So on $750 in charges I would have gotten $15 back.
$15 / 20,750 AA miles = 0.072 cents/mile
Well worth it.

Answer
same here... I would rather spend the $750 on my chairman card which would earn effectivley 1500 pts with flight points and if I spend that at grocery stores and gas stations, I would earn:
750 spent x 3 = 2250 purchase points
which gives me 4500 total point points including the flight points....I think that typ is more valuable than mileage programs...

Obviously if you were trying to churn a Citi AA card, you would hit the $750 threshold by charging purchases which earn you the fewest cash back/points, not the ones that earn you the most. So canuck_in_pa's analysis is correct.

agreed...but churning a card for 250 is way better than churning for 750....
so I was getting a cost per mile in this scenario...kepping all things equal....
the cost per mile does not work out in this example considering you can buy miles online for a cheaper cost...

Yes, exactly. That's what I do. At $750 it becomes a pain though, to get to that level quickly without including airfare, gas, groceries, pharmacy (Citi Chairman), rental cars (Diners Club), tuition (Visa UA), and hotels (Amex SPG, Amex HH, Marriott Premier Visa). I like to meet the spending requirement the first month so I can then forget about it.

right..at the $250 level, I can go to my local saltwater pet store and charge $250 to my acct....and then buy against as I feel.....no loss of double points...and I use up the 250 pretty easily...but 750...hell that will take some time....

Answer
This link still has the offer for 20,000 and $250. Aply while you can. It may not be there for very long.

If the link doesn't work I got in on the Citi website. Just went to search cards.

This offer is good until June 30, 2007 in the fine print. Make sure to print the page. I had a discrepency on my miles. They asked for proof of the offer.

Answer
I also received an email on March 13, but mine still had the $250 threshhold. I closed my last AA MC account in November.

Answer
I see everyone is argueing the merits of $250 vs. $750 and how much longer it will take (3 times longer if my math is correct, LOL!) But there has been no discussion on the fact that this offer also includes a $50 AA travel Cert and a companion cert. Certainly this gives greater value to the $750 in purchases?
The $750 wont slow my purchases as my wife "helps" me by putting everything on the new cards each month. When she goes shopping she says she is out earning miles!

Answer
Candymanjim, IMHO the certs are worthless, sadly, even at the $50 level. The BOGO cert I was able to use once, many years ago, but, now that it is cheaper and easier to book on the 'Net, I doubt I'll ever use one again. And, as to the $50 cert, again, I don't believe they can be used for 'Net bookings and they come with some tricky restrictions. I don't want to spend more to book a ticket in an effort to save money. :td:
However, even without the certs, 20K bonus miles are aokay. ^

Answer
As for the companion cert, does anyone know if Hawaii is off limits in the restrictions?

This is a quote from the cert:
Valid for travel on flights within the 48 contiguous United States and Alaska on American Airlines, American Eagle and AmericanConection carriers. For residents of Hawaii only, valid for round-trip travel originating in Hawaii and continuing to the 48 contiguous United States and Alaska.

Answer
spend 750 then return items.
They'll take the miles back!! Or should I say they MAY take them back.

AA will post negative miles for the purchases returned --- not sure how they will handle the bonus miles though, which is the important thing.

Answer
Candymanjim, IMHO the certs are worthlessNo they're not. I've saved money. If they were transferrable I'd take 'em off your hands. This is discussed in other threads dedicated to certs.

We already have an AA Citi MC. Can we get another one, with the perks, and later close the first one?

You can't have two of the same "product" in your name at the same time and earn bonuses. You can, however, do any of the following:
1. Have a personal AND business card.
2. Have a gold AND Platinum Card.
3. Have a MC and a Citi AMEX product.
4. Your spouse can also request one of each card under their name.
All of these options will yield extra bonus miles.

Sorry but that is incorrect. I am currently holding multiple AA personal platinum Master Cards and multiple AA business platinum Master Cards. I got bonus miles for all the cards. You can do a new application for the same card every 60 days alternatively you can even apply for say a AA MC and Amex together every 60 days.

Well, I stand corrected. I knew about 60 days, but I thought that was only if you had already cancelled the pre-existing accounts. Are the business cards all in your name for the same business name?

Answer
I was just talking to Citi about a new app and the rep told me that I could only have three of the same type of product such as AA World MasterCard and AA Citi Amex card. These are the "same" because there is no preset limit on spending.
Wonder if the same applies to AA Citi business cards?
By the way, I just tried to use one of the companion certificates for two seats LAX ORD. It would have cost me around $600 for two with the cert. I bought two tickets (and got miles for both) for less than $400.

Absolutely Wrong! I currently have 3 active Citibank Aadvantange Platinum Mastercards in my wallet! I have collected bonuses on all of them. I also have a Citi AA Amex and 2 Citi AA Business Cards.

Yep all of them are in my name for the same business name. Enjoy it while it lasts :). I have a feeling that Citi will put some kind of limitations on the numbers of applications and bonuses ala the Chase United Card!
