UAL Miles Withdrawn by Chase on Account Close

Question
Has anyone experienced bonus miles withdrawn by Chase, if the UAL Card was closed after few months of activation.
I have not seen anyone posting (on this forum as well as other forums) that Chase withdrew miles from their UAL account for early account closing.
Just curious !!!!

Answer
Yes, It happens all the time. It happened to me twice.

Answer
Do they try to take any further/other action if you have used those miles and have none or a very low amount afterwards? (say your balance is 0 to start with)

Answer
I heard from Chase that they withdraw bonus miles if the account is closed within six months or so. Not sure about the exact month.

I've heard six months as well can anyone else confirm this? I've never lost miles when I've closed an account I've had 6+ months.

Answer
Never heard of that before
once you miles are transfer to
Onepass
UAL
Advantage
they dont take them back
I use to work for American AIrlines Advantage desk
One miles are transfer to acct credit card companies do not have access
to the acct.
Unless it was in error or you had double miles they would have to take to the Airlines Miles desk and a letter is sent out

This question has come up before, because Chase (aka First USA aka First Bank aka Bank One) has been making this threat for years.
dudemon-- This is the first time I've heard someone claim it wasn't a bluff. For that reason could you please provide more details? How long was your account opened each time? How long ago was this? Why did you let it happen a second time? Did you consider converting the account instead of closing it?
I haven't churned Chase cards, but had to cancel once years ago. After being threatened with pulled miles, I converted the card to a no fee $2/1 mile visa as the rep suggested. No problem.

Answer
IMHO, the issue is: why cancel? There is no annual fee for the first year, so hang on for seven months and then cancel. Or call up, and see if you can get some extra miles for not canceling. ^
I have gotten various bonus offers for not canceling, such as 5K miles, double miles on charges, or, on an Amex AA card, five miles per $ for charges at supermarkets, gas stations and pharmacies for a year. And, you can still cancel (or get another bonus) in a couple of months. :)

5K? Wow I have been happy with just 1K when cancelling Citi AA cards.

I cancelled mine after three months, but the bonus miles were not withdrawn from UAL Account (cancelled card this Jan)
Recently, I have seen threads related to this issue, so just wanted to make sure before cancelling my wife's account.

Answer
This is old news and there are plenty of people who have reported having the miles pulled from their accounts, see this forum and the UA forum and to a lessor extent MilesBuzz. I know most people don't read the terms and conditions for the cards but its in there. Since this can change just take a look at your particular cards T&Cs to make certain of what it is.

Answer
You want proof - here it is:
Jul 25, 2006 CHASE BONUS REVERSAL -20,000 0 0 -20,000
for a card that was cancelled in March 06 for less than 6 months holding period. Never received any threat of pulling miles when cancelled the card.
Note the cancellation was made in March and the mile reversal happened in July. Even got a letter of notification from Chase afterward.
There is no double posting. Chase decided to enforce the T&C that is all.

Answer
Has anyone had any recent experience with getting miles to *not* cancel?
I've got several Chase/United cards. I did some churning last year, and will be coming up on the annual fee hit later this spring and summer. I was planning to bail on one or two cards, but *might* be persuaded to keep one or two open if they threw some miles my way.

Answer
I don't remember the details, but I got a few miles offered to me to keep open my UAL/Chase account when I cancelled to avoid the annual fee. I think they offered 1,000 miles, but gave it to me in 100/month increments, in addition to waiving the fee. I didn't really care if I cancelled anyway, since I wasn't planning to churn in the near future. I cancelled it after about 3 months, and they DID take away the bonus 100 miles.

Yes. They gave me 1000 miles, waived the annual fee, changed my account from platinum to gold (1 mile for every 2 dollars spent, no annual fee), and sent me another $20 check to activate "Credit Protector", which I promptly cashed. (No fees with a zero balance.) ;) Thank you FlyerTalk!

Answer
I cancelled my united credit card under the 6month mark, however I had already used the united miles to purchase tickets.
Dont think they can pull after points applied to tickets?

Answer
That's interesting, but I'd be careful. You may go negative, or if United is evil, they may cancel your ticket(s) or require you to buy miles to make up for the missing ones. I'd just watch it --- hopefully you aren't going too negative if they do yank the miles.
BTW, I have had my miles post as negative (on American, I believe) when once I had a return on my CC that I hadn't used. I didn't go negative on my AA balance, but that was an interesting one.

Answer
After the United points were used to purchase tickets, United actually transferred the " inventory" to US airways, so I think Im safe.

Interesting factoid about AA. If you return something, they will deduct miles from your available balance. However, your lifetime # is like an odometer, no way to roll it back!
So, if you were mischevious, you could buy a bunch of stuff, return it, but get credit to 1MM or 2MM status. A lot of work, but still possible. :p
