Question
I've read about credit card companies that deliberately delay posting payments to generate fees but have never encountered one until now. My January payment was due on a Sunday (how are they supposed to get mail?) and mailed in plenty of time to reach them on Saturday. They posted the payment two days past the due date and charged me more than $55 in late fees and finance charges.
I have a perfect history of paying on time and always pay my balance in full. I called a week ago and requested that they review the fees. I got the letter today saying they would not waive them, so I called and talked to a supervisor and then her supervisor. No-one was at all interested in being helpful.
I've canceled my card and would warn others to be very careful. I filed a complaint with the BBB and found that this company has 103 complaints relating to billing in addition to more than 30 other types of complaints.

Thank you - good to know!!!
I live in Cincinnati and because of the gas rewards have thought of this cc. I am like you but with other companies - they have decreased their charges based on being a good paying customer in the past.
Thanks again.

What does this have to do with " S.P.A.M.-Sites with Points and Alternative Miles, including referral bonuses, congas and any other loyalty currencies."??

I considered it a loyalty currency like other rewards cards. Do you disagree? Perhaps only loyalty currencies for travel type companies are included, but I thought the SPAM forum was pretty open.
My apologies if I erred.

it is not unusual to have an occassional piece of mail show up late.
I assume you do not have proof of mailing or proof of delivery, both of which can be purchased from the post office.
Answer
We pay the minimum credit card amount due online even if paying the entire bill via a check. We do this in plenty of time to avoid late fees.
Making a bill due on a Sunday when likely nothing is even processed on the Saturday is just nasty.
Thanks for the warning.
Answer
I have seen this due on Sunday thing with the 2 cards I carry. Seems pretty low to me and then add to that they expect the payment before cutoff times of like 10:00 am. This effectively makes the payment due the day before the payment is due.
I must say that the Amex *wood is great with their online payment system. Pick the date you want the $ posted and forget it. It even takes a day or two for the $ to leave my checking.
Thanks for the heads up with this specific card.

Check out Frontline's (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/credit/) piece on credit cards.

I am moving to the Credit Card Forum.

I cannot understand why anyone on Flyertalk still pays any credit card with a paper check through the postal service. If you use online bill payment offered by your own bank they will assist you if a payment is posted late.

Amen--I would never pay any bill by mail, unless there is no alternative. Almost all credit card sites (I have no idea about Kroger) let you pay or schedule payment online, so Sunday deadlines are not a problem. Paying online has many benefits: (1) you know exactly when the bill is credited and when your bank account will be debited; (2) for some sites, you can schedule payments on a recurring basis so that don't have to worry about due dates each month; (3) you don't have to worry about mail being delayed or lost; and (4) you save 39 cents on postage.:D

I guess I'm just a dinosaur. I drive a car with manual transmission (boy are those getting hard to find used). I don't have cable TV. I don't have a touch tone phone.
I don't pay anything online. I don't use an electronic accounting software or file my taxes online. We were without a computer at home for six months or so and I didn't really miss it much.
I do have an indoor bathroom, though I remember when we got it. Ditto with home phone service. I was 8 yo for the former and 12 for the phone.

Hey, that's no problem at all--I don't run out and buy the latest gadgets myself. I think mia's point was that if you are savvy enough to access and post on FT, then you can certainly make online payments. Give it a try--there's no cost :) and you may save yourself time, worry, and even a little money.
Answer
Indeed, my point is that online bill payment is genuinely superior for this purpose because your bank will have more credibility with the card issuer than an individual.

Hey, I drive a manual, too. And don't have cable either (250 channels and nothing to watch) I pay by check.
A guy in the office set up one of those automatic payment plans several years back. The bank kept taking money out, even though the bill had been paid. He about bled through the eyeballs to get it fixed. Guess it sort of soured me on automatic payment
Allowing at least five business days for a payment to be recieved and credited seems to work for me.
Answer
Electronic bill pay isn't perfect, merely superior.
