Question
I've been thinking about shifting all my spend/banking to Citi to earn the most thankyou points I can, since most of my spend is through Citi credit cards anyways.
So here's my plan so far:
Citibank Checking/Savings/CD/Debit Card/Direct Deposit/Online Bill Pay = 600pts/month
PremierPass Elite = 2pts/dollar (my default card)
DriversEdge = 6pts/dollar (gas, groceries, and drugstores) + matching for miles driven
mtvU = 5pts/dollar (restaurants, movies, and books) - just applied for this one
Professional = 3pts/dollar (restaurants, auto rentals, and office supplies) - will try for this one if mtvU isn't approved
Anyone else know of additional ways to earn more points?

If I'm not mistaken, the Professional card is also based on your personal credit, not that of your business. So if you are declined for mtvU, you will get declined for the Professional as well. Applying again after a decline will seriously hurt your FICO score since it would predict a "credit hungriness".
I also believe that mtvU is targeted to the youth population (under 30) so the criteria should be looser than on Professional

If a consumer is declined for mtvU based upon creditworthiness, I cannot understand why Citi would approve a different card (unless it was a lower tier product).
The fact that you are declined for credit does not show up on your credit report. The only artifacts of the application are the credit inquiry and the new account if one is openend. 2 credit inquires may decrease your score. However, it will not decrease by a greater amount if you are declined.

I'm a recent grad, so I'm not sure I'll be approved for mtvU - that's really the only reason why I can think I'll be denied.

I am looking into this as well and switching my banking to Citi. I am considering adding the checking plus. It looks to be on $5/yr and would add 200 thank you points a month (for you by getting at least 7 products/services instead of 6). I think the 2400 thank you points outweigh the $5 yearly charge.

even better: I sign up for checking plus and get the first 6 months free. Then I cancel, and a few weeks later call back and ask for it again. I have yet to pay a $5 fee after 1 year, and have gotten by extra 200 TY Points every month. 2400 TY points for free is $5 better than 2400 TY points for $5!
Answer
Thanks Psychtobe. I will be enrolling then calling to cancel every 6 months!!

Isn't mtvU for students only?

Isn't mtvU for students only?
Yes. On the application it asks for details about your school. I'm not sure if they actually verify.
I'm planning on getting the mtvU card for my wife who is a graduate student. Can the points she earns be pooled with the points I earn from other Citi cards? What about a joint checking account in both our names- can I send those points to her account instead of mine?
Thanks!
Answer
HI Jmorgans,
No, you and your wife can not pool points into one account unless you both have the same credit card account. Also, if you're the primary account holder for the checking account, the points you earn from this account can only be combined with the points that you earn from your credit card account which you're the primary account holder.

Are there any Thank You bonus point rewards currently for getting a second card for a spouse, specifically with the Premier Pass Elite and/or Diamond Preferred cards? If so, is there a link to the bonuses or a particular process to follow?

Answer
I too have searched the TYN site and cannot find any link for getting the 5K bonus mentioned above. Any more help, michaeln or anyone else?
Answer
Log in to your Citi cards account. However, the 5k basically comes out of their signup bonus as they only get 10k.

I would not recommend applying for checking plus, then cancelling and applying again. Every time you apply for credit it stays on your credit report. That is NOT worth $5. On the other hand if you put some of your retirement money into citibank and bring your balance to $100,000 you can upgrade your checking account to citigold, get 1200 typ a month, not be charged the $5 fee and have your credit card fees waived, they now say one choice of cards, but in reality each does not know about the others so your aadvantage card fee, your diner's club fee and your premier pass fees would all be waived.
