What happen to earnedTY points if I cancell my citi premier credit card

Question
Hi,
I have been using the premier elite citi credit card for the last 2 years. The card has an $75.00 annual fee. I have about 100,000 thank you points left. I'm just wondering will I loose these points if I cancell my premier elite credit card or once I earned these points, they are mine to keep and use them later, say a year, from now. Also, if I redeem these points now for airline tickets to be travel in Jun 07 and do not renew my premier elite membership when it's due (March 07), will Citi cancel my airline tickets?. I tried to read the Citi memership rules and can't find the answers to my questions. Thanks in advance to your responses. I'd certainly appreciate it if you can give me the sources (e.g. citi's official rules, etc.) of your response.

Answer
You must maintain a ThankYou Point-earning account otherwise your ThankYou account gets closed (at least this was true in the past--I couldn't find any mention of that in the T&C). The easiest option is to just downgrade your Elite account to a regular PremierPass account.
Oh, and welcome to FlyerTalk!

Answer
direct quote from the T&C 08/05:
"You may earn and redeem your total ThankYou Points long as your Card is open and current. However, if such Card is no longer current, you will not be able to earn or redeem your total ThankYou Points."
I also know that when you downgrade from and Elite Card to a regular pp card, the card account number changes, so I think you would lose the points on the elite card. No one at Thank You Network could answer this specific ? when I asked. To be safe, I would redeem all points before you close the account.
Once your airline ticket is purchased, they will not take the ticket if you no longer have an active account. Same as any other reward you choose.

Yeah, I know there used to be that sort of language in the T&C, but I didn't see anything of that sort in the current T&C on the web site.
This statement is incorrect though. Both the PPElite and PP regular are World Mastercards. Downgrading the card should maintain the same account number. I know a few people who have done this in the past.

Answer
Hi,
Thank you all for taking the time to answer my questions. Your responses were certainly helpful. I will downgrade my PPelite to regular. This way I don't have to pay for the annual fee of $75.00 and at the same time, I don't have to worry about loosing the TY points that I have earned since the last 2years.

Answer
The credit card account number does not matter. Whether one downgrades or converts, your Thank You account will remain the same. As long as you maintain a Thank You capable account, you will keep the points.
