Question
Took this card 2 yrs ago due to targeted offer for bonus miles. Worst customer service ever in my life, though, and have no plans to hang onto it once I get redeem the last award I have earned and spend the account credit.
Renewal cards don't come in the mail, so I call in to advise them of such and ask that they send me replacement cards. They do so and I use the replacement card twice over a 3 week period before leaving on a trip intending to use the card. On checking into hotel 2500 miles from home at 2 am, card is rejected. I call Capital One and am informed that they have cancelled my account and must issue new cards with a new account number BECAUSE MY CARD WAS LOST IN THE MAIL AND IS NO LONGER ACTIVE. I ask why this wasn't done 3 weeks earlier when I called them about it. They don't know "because you talked to someone else." I say check the notes to see who made the request for a new card and let me use the card for the next 2 days. They refuse. I ask for supervisor who says too bad but they have a "policy" that they must follow and nothing he can do to help me. Yes, I had another card so not a show stopper. But made it very clear that Capital One is nothing but huge hassles.
Making matters worse, I have a $157 credit balance on the card that they cancelled and refused to allow me to use while away. So I say AVOID them!!!!
Answer
I feel your pain ... I'm in the process of working my way out of this card and moving balances to 2 other cards I now have. I've had the card for over 5 years and when they devalued the points I had accumulated I bargained them down to a 7.9% fixed rate.
Once the balance is paid off (it will be soon), I'll be asking for another reduction just for safekeeping if my balances creep up again.
Answer

I signed up for a Capital One card in 2005 when I received a good offer: for every 8000 miles, you could receive a ticket worth $100. In other words, the payoff was $1.25 for every $100 spent on the card. Factoring in 20,000 bonus miles, it seemed pretty good. Well, four months later, Capital One changed the whole program, devaluing the miles so that the best possible payoff was $1.00 per $100 spent. And because of the tiers of rewards (15,000 miles for all tickets up to $150; $35,000 miles for all tickets between $150-$350), it is difficult to get the full payoff. So, I dumped the card--almost any cash back card will give you 1% or more, so there's no need to fool with Capital One.
Answer
My offer was same as WSFLYER and everything changed for me too soon after getting the card. Used card just enough to get the full bonuses and intend to drop it once I use the last 15K points for a ticket priced under $150. New benefit structure is lousy.
Answer
I use the card only for foreign (ex-US) transactions, because there's no transaction fee (3% with most other cards).
Other than that, I pay no attention to their "free miles" or whatever and never use it for anything else.

That's the same exact reason I have a Capitalone credit card. If it wasn't for the no fee for foreign transactions, I probably wouldn't have it.

Evertime I see a thread like this about Capital One, I am more determined to trash the incredible number of junk mail solicitations by this spamming bank of ill repute.
IMO, they had a decent afffinity program at one time...now its just a classic Bait and Switch....livving on the reputation they once had. They seem to be now playing the "greater fool" scheme where they know even as one customer leaves....two join up...
One of my favorite local junior bankers was recruited and ultimately did join Cap One locally...and while I might otherwise have been tempted to take my company's business to him as he moved to this local Cap One bank...knowing what I know about Cap One through these forums...means I would never take my company's banking business to Cap One.
After all, fool me once, shame on you...fool me twice, shame on me.
