Question
I use my AMEX Starwood exclusively and have decided to cancel my Citi AA World Mastercard.
On the card itself, it says 'Good thru 12/31/2009'. When does Citi charge their membership renewal fee?
Also, are there any know retention offers if I call up and threaten to cancel?
Answer
The membership fee is charged on or righat after your card anniversaries, depending on your statement cycle.
Yes there is retention. Just call and tell them you want to cancel. You will be transferred if you qualify for retention.

Also, are there any know retention offers if I call up and threaten to cancel? You are charged annually for your card, may or may not coincide with month of expiration. You have 30 days from the point when you receive your statement with the renewal fee to cancel the card (and pay it off) to avoid the fee, so you don't have to cancel it now.
Retention offers vary from time to time. Once I was offered miles, once I was offered nothing. The Citibank person said that sometimes they have offers and sometimes they don't. The supervisor confirmed that.
Answer
can always take the retention bonus and then cancel after it posts :P

I called a month ago (when I still had a month to go on the fee-free year) to cancel and the retention department offered me 3,000 miles to stay on. I didn't cancel, charged a couple little things on the card, paid the bill and canceled "for real" last week. I got to talk to the retention department again, but no offer of additional miles. How long do I have to wait to get a new AA card with the signing bonus. Is it 90 days?

I assume you have had the card for a few months and if that is the case. Go ahead and apply. Should have applied before the cancellation though.

So Ic alled today to cancel and was transferred to the "account specialist" ie.e retention dept. They made me 2 offers wich caught me by surprise:
1. Double miles on all purchases for 6 months
or
2. 5:1 miles on Supermarkets, Pharmacy, Gas.
This caught me off gaurd. Now, the real reason I want to cancel is because I want to avoid the $50 renewal fee. I already have an StarWood AMEX for all my purchases.
What to do...

These are both great offers. Just to make sure I understand this correctly, did they offer you 5 miles per $1 spent at Supermarkets, Pharmacy, Gas?

Yes, 5 for $1 at Superkarket, Pharmacy, Gas.
The thing is my wife already pays the annual fee for her Citi, so I really don't have the need for it. What I really wanted was a lump 3K bonus or waive the annual fee.
Answer
I called to cancel and was tranfered to an account specialist. They offered 1000 miles. I still have 3 months before the annual fee is due, so I took it. I wish I had asked if they had other offers.

What to do...Wow! I've never heard of such an offer. Was there any kind of cap on the bonus miles? Some of us could do some serious damage with a deal like this. I would put my Starwood card on the back burner for six months if I could get this. I take it you don't use your Citi card much...
Answer
As it turns out, the offers I got were capped at 5000 miles. I spents more than that this month, and only got 5K.
So, I called again to cancel this week, since I'm within the 45 day membership window. Again, they offered me another 5K. They framed the discussion as 10K - i.e. the 5K I received and another 5 K- but I don't think it is worth it for me.
They also offered a low 2.99% loan, or a free upgradsde to the plat card. The retention dept certainly works hard to keep buisness.
In my case, we already pay for one AA card in our household, and I can't justify paying for another.

True. I would take it without any second thought.

I called twice today (different cards). Both times they attempted to Pimp that companion cert. You know the one, lower 48 only, $299 and above, 14+ day's out with a Saturday stay, in certain fare codes.
Anyway, one offer was double miles up to 5k. Second was just 1k miles on next statement.

Who has been succesful in getting the annual fee waived?

Who has been succesful in getting the annual fee waived?
I called a couple of weeks ago and they gave me the choice of 5,000 miles or fee waived.
Answer
Have had fee waived on 2 biz cards no problem. Wasn't able to get a miles offer for not cancelling one though - after having had the fee waived months ago.

I just posted in the other thread, here. (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=394766)
Guess I should've read this thread first. I use my Citi AAdvantage Platinum card as a backup when they won't take my SPG AmEx. I was transferred to an account manager, and when I asked to cancel, he said he can do that right here. Guess I don't spend enough on it to qualify for "retention.":td:
In the end, he did offer to reduce $85 fee by $35 to match the Citi AAdvantage Gold card fee of $50. So I took it...better than nothing I guess.

Answer
There is a special retention department and you should make sure you ask for that department if you are looking for a bonus. You should also be serious about the cancellation if things do not go as planned,
