Question
I called to cancel my AA credit card because the annual fee is due in the next couple of month and I don't want to pay the fee. They put me through to somebody who offered me 3000 miles if I didn't cancel today. I caved and said OK, credit me the miles and I won't cancel today. Somehow I feel used, sort of.
I'll call next month to really cancel. Will I get the same dialog again?
Answer
When you attempted to cancel today, did they explain anything about the new Citi/AAdvantage Card Private Pass Program?
Answer
...who offered me 3000 miles if I didn't cancel today. I caved and said OK, credit me the miles and I won't cancel today. Somehow I feel used, sort of....uh, feeling used? I guess I consider everyone here to be some sort of mileage whore, self included. Don't feel bad, even if they don't send you flowers in the morning... :)
Regarding incentives for not cancelling -- On various occasions I have been offered nothing to 5000 miles for not cancelling. And on various cards, including Citi AA. Once I asked why -- the answer I got was that at various times they have bonus miles available and at various times they don't.

Answer
I'll call next month to really cancel. Will I get the same dialog again? No point in waiting until next month, just wait until the miles show in your advantage account on-line. If they offer you the miles again, why not take them again? If your annual fee was due last month and you agreed to pay it for the 3000 mile bribe, you have already paid the fee for the year so why not milk it for all it is worth, which I suspect is nothing but not sure...

I wonder if this can be timed. Do they get replenished monthly? quarterly? It would be cool if we could establish a pattern.

The customer service agent seemed to have the impression that it was more random than that. Promotions come and go, etc. I don't think it is going to be predictable, but you probably WILL be one of the first to know about it by reading the forum because some other lucky person will post it the day it happens...
