Question
will citi convert a citi AA card into a fee free product if you ask them or will the make you re apply for a new card and then convert your credit line over?
the reason why i ask is i will probably not renew my citi Aadvantage card now that i am using the starwood amex but have a decent line in the AA card that i want to keep but dont want to pay for. Thanks
Answer
They will happily convert you - just call up and ask. They may try to save you on the AA MC but they want you as a customer and will convert you no prob

will they do a hard pull? if they do i might as well sign up for a fee free card and transfer the credit line from the old card
Answer
It's very easy to convert with Citi. If you find a card you are interested in (check their website - although some card types can only be obtained by application), you can call and request that they convert your current account. The conversion is done instantly and you get the new card in about a week.
They do not pull your credit report to do the conversion.

Hmmm... You may want to check with them. I think that they pulled my credit when I upgraded from an AA Gold Advantage Card (not the World Master Card) to the Premier Pass Elite World Card. The key point here is that the World card does not have a limit.

If you are upgrading it to something with a higher limit, they will probably check your credit. But you are talking about going the other direction it sounds like.
Answer
Your account number will change if you convert from MC to Visa.

If you convert from the AA card to a free card your card number will probably (i.e. 90%) change. The reason is that the AA card is a World MasterCard. 90% of the free Citibank cards are not World MasterCards. Hence they cannot have the same number.
There is one exception. That is the Citi Premier Pass card. It is a World MasterCard and has no annual fee. It is possible that you could keep the same card number.
Usually when Citibank processes a card conversion, the account will be replaced on your credit report. However, recently I encountered an aberration in which they kept the old account and added a new account with no credit history. I am working on getting that repaired.
I seriously doubt that they will check your credit for a conversion from a World MasterCard to a World or Platinum card.

MasterCard offers Standard, Gold, Platinum, World, and World Elite cards. World and World Elite cards are supposedly "higher-level" premium cards than Platinum. World and World Elite cards do not have preset spending limits and have several additional benefits. For more information, read this article http://www.bankrate.com/brm/news/cc/19991213.asp or check www.mastercard.com and www.priceless.com.
These cards were introduced to attract customers from American Express which has done exceptionally well in the affluent customer demographic. However, the overall brand prestige has been difficult to establish, since every MasterCard has multiple branding elements: MasterCard, the issuing bank, the affinity program (if any), and finally standard/gold/platinum/world/world elite. American Express green/gold/platinum/titanium cards do not have this branding challenge. Hence they have retained superior prestige and allure.
Oh... you can tell if your card is a World card by looking for the word "World" near the MasterCard logo. Their are several AA card that are not World Mastercars, i.e. AAdvantage Gold MasterCard (not the Gold World MasterCard) and the AAdvantage
