Companion Certificate offered when cancelling Citi AAdvantage Card. Is it any good?

Question
I called to cancel my Citi AAdvantage card and was referred to the "retention desk." I hate when that happens. Anyhow, I was offered a companion certificate. They admitted there were a few blackout dates, for use on American only, and that the fare for the 1st passenger had to be a minimum of $299 for a coach ticket. Although I stated I find these companion certificates to never be practical, I went ahead and accepted the offer. I figured I"ll call back later to cancel again. I was kind of hoping they'd offer me miles. Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has ever received these companion certificates from Citibank, and if they actually saved you money? Thanks for sharing..

The $299 makes it sound like the certificate being given out with new accounts. I just used one to ticket in V and paid $416 all-in for 2 tickets that would have cost me $650+ (and more on other airlines). Of course, depending on the date/destination, you might find something better than what the certificate can get you. YMMV.
