I am an AMEX Plat holder. It seems this SPG card gets a ton of attention with posts, and it all appears to be very positive. In a nut shell, what is the advantage/reason for so many good comments?

Go to the American Express forum and do a search. Low price, 25% bonus on air mile redemptions of 20,000 points, great value for hotel stays, can be used on more airlines than American Express Membership Reward points, etc.
Downside, small sign-on bonus, no double points for groceries, gas and drug store items.

There are many SPG AMEX offers out there. Some offer the 4,000 points and some offer the 6,000 points. Make sure you do a search to find the right one.

Starpoints are definitely the most valuable.
In comparison, advantage to Amex MR is that they are attached to charge cards with no limit. And advantage to CITI TYP is you can earn for flights and award flights.

It's actually 10k bonus points, 4000 after 1st purchase 6000 after first qualifying stay using the card at any starwood properties.

As I said before, there are a couple of different offers out there. Note that SPG only awards 1,000 points after the first qualifying stay and then 500 points for each subsequent stay.
One is 10,000 points and it states:
-Get 4,000 Starpoints with yourfirst purchase on the Card
- Earn one Starpoint for every eligible $1 charged with the Card for any purchase
- Earn three Starpoints for every eligible $1 you spend at Starwood hotels and resorts. That's two Starpoints you earn as a Starwood Preferred Guest, plus an additional Starpoint just for paying with the Card
- Receive 1,000 bonus Starpoints upon first use of the Card for payment of an eligible stay at a Starwood hotel or resort
- Receive 500 bonus Starpoints for every additional eligible stay charged to the Card within the first 12 months of Cardmembership, up to a maximum of 10 stays (5,000 Starpoints)
