Question
I got a letter from AAdvantage by Citi MasterCard saying "You've been selectd for a gold-to-platinum upgrade..." What do you all think? Should I?
Ive had this card for over 1 yr and only subscribed because I needed a boost on an award travel FC ticket to BGI last spring with the Misses. I do not use this card and should have cancelled a long time ago, however seems to me that the fee increase of $30 might be worth the upgrade as you never know when you might want to start hoarding some AA points!

I think you can upgrade at any point (not just when selected). Are they offering you miles or a free companion certificate to upgrade? If you are not using the card I would not pay an extra fee for no reason. I think Gold will let you earn 60,000 AA miles a year while Plat will let you earn 100,000. If you approach 60, reconsider.
Call the customer service number on the back of your card and tell them you were thinking about upgrading and see if they offer you a perk to do so. Right now the AAdvantage advertisements I see online all offer a 12-month fee waiver.
That said I think it's a good card - why don't you use it?

I ommited a crucial part, my bad. Yes the letter has a "Receive a free companion certificate when you accept by..." I think it might be worth the extra $30/year even though I dont use it. Reason is that I load most of my expenses to SPG AMEX and the rest on NW WP VISA. Which im sure your all aware of SPG AMEX perks for FFs. Im a NW flyer to Europe and Asia and I like their WBC product for long-haul.
Yes your correct that Plat will let you earn 100k as well as a free rental of an international cell phone. (yeah I know... big deal).

One of my favoritwe benefits of this card is the free trip insurance/interruption coverage. Definately worth the $85 annual fee.
