If you are in their Specialty rewards programs (5% back on Gas, Home Improvement, or Restaurants) you are not eligible, but you can call them and ask to convert to the regular Cash Back program. You will then be elligible to sign up for the 5% online purchase promo as soon as your next billing cycle starts. Then, once this promo is over, you can just call them and switch back to the Specialty program you were in before. Doing this doesn't involve getting a new card or effect your credit. It is just a change in their computer system.

No, you are not missing anything. I too wish it was higher.... however it is an easy $25 really. It may not entice someone to get Discover if they don't have it already but it is a great deal if you are already a customer.

I agree-not much of a promotion-they seem to be following on the heels of the previous one.We have 2 Discover cards-we max out each promotion immediately then they return to the drawer.It is an easy 50.00,but I don't see it as much incentive for a new customer.

I activated new Discover cards last week and for some reason ended up talking to a human. He offered to sign me up for this offer, and also an offer where I earn $1 cashback every time I use the card for the next (I can't remember, 5 or 10) times.
I kept asking what the catch was, as I was more used to being offered something like credit protection or something like that.

Actually you get up to 2.5% with certain preferred merchants. They call that 5% if you redeem with Discover's 2-for-one CashBack Bonus merchants. Among the 2-4-ones, the only ones that offer a real deal are Blockbuster and Hollywood video and Samsonite. The rest are the usual overpriced and useless crap.

Where did you read that? I can't find anything along those lines online, however I have not signed up yet. Usually Discover doesn't mislead like that. It says "get a full 5% cash back bonus award" which doesn't indicate 2.5%. I think they would have to say **up to** 5% cash back if what you said is correct, and I am not sure they would even be able to legally say "cash back" either.
