Question
Heres the situation:
I have a Southwest Airlines Visa that I never use, last month I was checking my statement and noticed the annual fee just rolled in a couple days prior (bringing my card balance to a grand total of $39.00) So I call up Chase to cancel the card figuring they will credit the annual fee (while on hold I discover that the last thing I charged on the card was the annual fee last year..lol.)
I talk to some rep and tell them I wish to cancel the card, as they can see I don't use it, will they please credit the 39.00 fee and close the account. They tell me no problem, the account is closed, and the fee will be credited at the end of the billing cycle (im dubious). End of the billing cycle comes and goes "You current balance..$39.00..." Argh. Within a few days..you guessed it, some collections agency starts calling, GOOD GOD!!!
To make a long story short, I've talked to I would say atleast 8 different reps on different calls, now with 2 promising to pass the issue to their supervisor (who is never availiable to chat), and one promising a call back from a supervisor; both promised it would be cleared up in 24 hours, never happened.
Does anyone have a suggestion for further action I could take...Its clear that the regular reps can't clear the charge, but my concern is that this will eventually effect my credit score, and i've never had a late payment so this is kinda of personal to me.
Thanks for any help.

Alas it cleared off tonight (this has been over a month ordeal BTW), guess they got tired of me calling every day. I immediately canceled my British Airways VISA aswell and will have nothing to do with anything chase affiliated ever again. I told the supervisor who I spoke to "Amex doesn't treat me like a second class citizen".

How could a collection agency call you a few days after cancelling your card? I wouldnt think that the info left Chase at that point.
Are you sure they went hounding you for a different collection of bad debt?

Well it was after the end of the billing statement, so technically since they didn't cancel the charge like they should have it would have been passed due on their systems. I called early october and the payment was due on the 18th, 20th or so I started getting calls from a CMC, i didn't pickup the phone, just googled the number. One of the reps at chase confirmed that is who they use.
Plus the only card I use is my Amex which always has to be paid in full...now I guess we will see how long it takes for the calls to stop.
