My husband and I will be turning in miles in November that require 120, 000 FF miles for F class. We don't quite have the necessary miles so back in July I upgraded each of our "Gold" visas to "Platinum" visas at the tune of $140 a year fee. I did this solely because it stated on the letter offer sent in the mail... "Double miles for every $1 you spend on purchases like groceries, gas, dining out and home improvement."
It did have a #1 after the statement and on the back of the letter (in small print) it stated... "Bonus miles will post to your credit card account within 8-10 weeks of accepting this offer. In order to receive the Bonus Miles, your United Mileage Plus credit card account must be open and not delinquent a the time we post the miles. When you qualify for the bonus miles, they will be reflected on your monthly credit card statement approximately 6-8 weeks following the last calendar day of the month in which they were earned. These bonus miles are non-transferable. (Sorry for their long winded explanation.)
Just called United Visa to complain that my last statement balance was $4,103, that I received 4,103 FF miles but only received 1,583 FF bonus miles. It was explained to me that the double miles are ONLY on purchases of groceries, gas, dining out, home improvement, and any United purchases as well. As an added insult, the home improvement double miles are only for home improvement stores, not actual home improvement i.e., heating, air, plumbing.
I let my attorney husband read the offer and he said it's just plain dishonest, that the word "like" certainly does not mean "only".
I'm a fairly savvy person who really feels duped! Would love to hear from others that upgraded to the Platinum Visa, whom also assumed double miles meant double miles.
