Hi
My Aadvantage Citibank MC is due for renewal on 9/30/2005. I would appreciate advice as how best to politely call them telling them I wish to cancel and then letting them persuade to renew as they are offering me (for example) 3000 miles...
How close to the 30th should I call? Any sample lines to use to trigger them offering me a retention bonus?
My average balance is fairly low, although it used to be higher, and I pay off my card every month. Will this weigh into their response?

You have to call after fee appears in the statement, tell that other cards (even their own Dividend card) are more competitive and have better promos.
If you didn't use card much, you might draw a blank - then I'd press on and convert your card to free Dividend card - I accumulated four Dividend cards this way.
After that you are free to turn around and apply for AA via next promo.
