Mileage Plus Platinum Card

Question
Don't know if this has been posted before...but received the following in the mail today.
Dear Mr Stinky,
You are invited to be one of the first to upgrade (I have the usual UA MP Gold level Visa) to the new Platinum Class Visa Signature Card. It offers extraordinary benefits, blah blah blah.
Double miles for every $1 spent on everyday items
Companion Ticket every year
Attain next status level faster by earning 1 EQM per $1 spent with United
5000 EQM with first purchase
No mileage cap
No mileage expiration
I checked the back of the letter and in very fine print - By upgrading, you accept that you will be charged $140 p.a. for the cost of the card.

Answer
I have a tough time justifying a $140 annual fee for this card. The benefits simply do not dazzle me enough versus the no-annual fee the first year UAL card.

There is a hidden no-fee UA Signature card. I had it once, but I became angry at the extremely rude customer service, so I cancelled it. Then I ended up getting a no-fee NWA card. It's the same deal. Earns only 1 point per $2, but the customer service is much better than UA.

Hi, welcome to FT!
As for the no fee NWA card, how does one get one now? Any ideas?

I had the NW Visa Signature for a couple years then closed due to the $90 annual fee. Their retention rep offered me both the $55 annual fee Visa Platinum, as well as a Visa Classic (I think they called it that). No annual fee, and 1 mile for every $2 spent. Don't know if it's offered for new signups or only for retention purposes. It's an unadvertised product, so you'd have to ask for it.

I just called and upgraded to the platinum from gold. It's a pro-rated, so it only cost me $18 until Dec. or so. I figure since you get double miles at all restauraunts, grocery stores and gas stations, and that is all I buy other than plane tickets, it is worth the extra expense. We'll see if I feel that way when its time to pay the yearly fee again.
Only 5k mile bonus to upgrade (well, 5k regular plus 5k eqm), but I figure I can apply for one of the other 17.5k or 20k offers with a new card in a month or two and be happy.
