United does not give away anything. Its the BankOne who buys these miles from united and then gives it away to new potential customers. Its a good deal for United. They collect the money upfront with a promise to provide a seat on one of their planes sometimes in the future. As for BankOne. I don't feel bad about them or any other bank for that matter. They make plenty of money by nickle and diming the customers.
