Question
Wow! I've played the credit card game between United and American generally switching cards annually to take advantage of the bonus miles offered by each airline. I pay my balance off entirely each month but always figured the $50 or $60 annual fee for these cards was worth the 12,500 or 15,000 bonus miles I received for signing up.
Today I received the best offer yet from United. Basically I am "Pre-Approved" for a United Mileage Plus Visa with no annual fee for the first year and after the first use of the card my United mileage account will be credited with 20,000 bonus miles.
Answer
Targeted? Or is there a URL in the application?
Answer
Targeted? Or is there a URL in the application?
It was a targeted mail piece. They did give an email link (www.getthecardnow.com) but my letter also had a code that I had to enter.
Answer
Here's a non-targeted link, but has the $60 fee:

Answer
60 dollars fee for 20K bonus miles is still worth it.

Answer
In the fine print of the T&C, it states the following:
"If your account is not open for at least six months, United and Chase reserve the right to deduct the bonus miles from your Mileage Plus Program account."
Also, take note of this:
"United Mileage Plus frequent flyer miles will not expire for members who earn or redeem miles at least once every 36 months."
Answer
I got the 20K Mileage Plus Plat. offer via email.
Answer
Is there a special link only in that email or you have to enter some offer #. If it is just a link then perhaps you can forward us the email so that we can all benefit?
Answer
I'm sure hundreds of folks on here know this already, but you can definetly sign up and cancel basically as many times as you want and keep betting the bonus. I've got well over 100k in my MP account right now, about 90% of which is due exclusively to CC bonuses like this one. I intend to sign up and take advantage of this one now, too.
On more than one occassion, I've been lucky enough to have the miles post before the annual fee is charged, at which point I cancel... free 15k/20k miles... depending on which offer you get. Anyway you slice it, it could work out to an F ticket to Europe for $300. Certainly not a free ticket, but one helluva discount nonetheless. :)
Answer
Well I applied for the card almost 4 weeks ago and haven't heard anything but received another targeted offer in the mail today. This one has a little flyer that says "Earn 20,000 bonus miles* just request your Mileage Plus Visa card today." Then in small print it says "please see the reverse side for complete details." The reverse side is identical even with the "please see reverse side for complete details." Why i've flipped the card over hundreds of times but still fail to find the complete details
However this card has no annual fee for the first year and in the accompanying letter it states "The first time you make a purchase, you'll earn 20,000 bonus miles and 5,000 additional miles that will count as Elite Qualifying Miles."
Can't beat that...now I just need to receive my new Visa card and have a cup of java at Starbucks!

Kixo:
I'm sure the bouncing back and forth doesn't help matters. I'm one who pays my bills within a day or two of receiving them since I travel so much and hate late charges so my credit should be A+ I have been going back and forth with cards from AA and UAL and last time AA rejected me...said I had too much credit available to me. The customer service person asked if I had additional income and I told her I had divident income...asked her how much I should say - she replied "just toss out a number". So I said $20,000 and voila; I was approved on the spot.
But to answer your question, I do think the bouncing doesn't help and may hurt a bit but I also figure if the banks are willing to "pre approve" me about 6 times every day, that's their problem. I would think differently if I was late on my bills or needed to secure a mortgage in the near future.

If I wanted to apply for this card how long do I need to wait after canceling my current UA MP card?I would generally wait 90 days between applying for new card and the closing of the previous one.
Answer
Others correct me if i'm wrong here, but this new offer (I received mine today as well - no annual fee) does not indicate "bonus miles are for first time cardmembers only..." as previous offers have said. Is this because it's now CHASE and not BankOne/First USA?
I have a current UA card (just paid the $60 fee), i'll apply for this new one and see what happens. The rep swears "many" people have 2 of the same type of UA cards..

I have the card and get these offers in the mail on a weekly basis. I'm going to go for number 2 soon. I tried a few months ago and was told I had too much available credit. Apperently cards I signed up for years ago but never used was the problem. The CSR suggested I not cancel them, since even though I never made a purchase with them, I technically never made a late payment in 5 years either. Instead I am lower my credit limits on them and trying again in August or so. Much simpler than a MR. I hadn't seen the offer with 5000 eqms though.

I received my Visa card two days ago and charged a tank of gas on it...should get me the 20,000 miles... I did read in the fine print that I can't close this account for 6 months or they reserve the right to deduct the miles back out of my account....but since the offer was for 20,000 after the first time I used the card, I figure my tank of gas will suffice...then the card will rest in a drawer for 6 months.
This is a targeted offer so I'm not sure you can take advantage of it but the link is www.sendmethecard.com and the telephone number for the offer is 1-800-225-2347.

The 17,500 mile offer does not have a free year. Click on "Pricing and Terms" and it shows the $60 / year fee.

I threw away the first one. And today a 2nd one came from mail.
It does require you to keep the card for 6 months for the bonus. It was the last line on the fine print at the back.

I called the number and told the CSR that I lost the invitation and if I could just apply. After taking my name and address she knew ALL the offers that United has recently sent me and that this particular offer was not one of them. She also asked how I got this number and I just said a friend of mine had gotten and applied for this offer recently.
I hope that United will send me this offer now that they know I am interested.:)
Thanks,

Applied for and got this card a few days back. Anyone know if they'd allow a balance transfer for 0%? I didn't see anything the paperwork about it, so I'm assuming that if they do offer it, it's not advertised or promoted. Has anyone tried asking? I don't need miles for it. I'd really just like a chunk of cash to invest for 6 months or so. Just curious!
Incidentally, the T&C say you get the 20k bonus within 6-8 weeks, but that they can deduct the bonus from your MP account if you close CC account within 6 months. If you've already spent the bonus, how in the heck would they be able to send your account into the red?

I hope you're talking the telephone number when you ask about the invite number....phone number is 1-800-225-2347
Funny thing is that I received the Visa card in the mail last month and used it for a tank and gas and put it in the drawer to await the 6 month time requirement. Yesterday I received a letter saying that they were pleased to inform me that that they have upgraded my account with exciting new benefits and would be sending me a new card shortly (and to destroy the old one when I receive the new one). I received the new card yesterday also.
I would say the competition among reward cards sure must be fierce.

All of my kids got the offer, but I haven't. What gives?
Answer
that was on the 2nd invitation I received.
Today I received a 3rd invitation letter - haven't yet checked if it has the same invitation code and offer code with the previous one.
Edit: just checked. It has a different invitation number and offer code.
I wonder can I apply again and get 2 cards ?
Answer
I just got the offer in the mail today for the 20k with first year fee waived. Does anyone know if there are restrictions on these points or not, I would like to just transfer them to Diners Club, and then to my Onepass account
Answer
Just called and said a friend of mine got the offer. She said no problem and signed me up. Sound like the Visa Signature card with $60 annual fee even though she just said Signature card when reading the (absurdly long!) customer service agreement. She did say you get 20K miles but I didn't want to press and ask about the 5K eqms since she signed me up without the cryptic double combination offer numbers :) Have all of you that applied by the 1-800-225 number gotten 5K EQMs?
Answer
20K signup bonus, no fee first year (but you need to keep the card for 6 months otherwise they will take back the bonus).
double miles earned if purchase tkt on UA site, and 1$ spent on UA ticket earns 1 EQM up to 5K EQM.
However, the 1-800 number is not the one posted here. 1-800-297
same number on both invitations.
Actually I received 3 invitations so far. The first one I threw away. Then I filled out the 2nd one on Aug 2. Received a canned response from Chase saying they will inform me within 30 days in writing, and tell me not to apply any more card should I receive another invitation as Chase can only consider the first application it received.
I imagine anyone can sign up for 20K $60 fee. But it needs the invitation number and offer code to get the no fee and 5K EQM incentives.

My 11 year old got the offer as well. I never get the same offers as he does. No problem tho. Call and tell them that your son got the offer and you would like to use it. That's what I did. 20,000 miles and annual fee waived. It sounded to me that this was a non-targeted offer when I spoke to the CSR. I have a different number 1-866-620-8027, no web site. The offer stated to use the application or call. They must be very busy as I had to wait on the phone over 15 minutes. Let's see, 20,000 miles for 15 minutes... I'll take a day's worth please ;)

Have received this offer three or four times from United, and the latest one has me considering it pretty strongly. I've got almost no UA miles, I've put them all on US, other than some Safeway grocery miles I use to just keep the account going. But I'm figuring that 20,000 miles for free is a no-brainer.
For those who have a UA card, have you ever been able to get them to waive the membership fee for the second year? Any hassles with the card that I should know about?
As a note, the latest came with a different toll-free number than two of the earlier ones which I found lying around, but all the other details are the same (15.99% variable interest rate, for someone who asked).
Answer
Got the card last week, and put 1/2 a tank of gas on it. Now it will rest in my cabinet for 6 months till I cancel it. How long do the miles take to post? I want to get them transferred to DC right after they do.

Roar! I signed up the DAY BEFORE I got the offer in the mail (have since gotten 2 more). When I called to activated the card they said that the fee was waived, but low and behold the fee showed up the first time I checked my balance online.
I've talked to 3 different people (one who told me to call United???) and they still haven't waived the stupid fee. I faxed them the offer letters that were sent and will follow up on Friday but the card people seem pretty hopeless.
Yeah yeah, $60 for 20k miles is good, but the offer must have been active for my MP number since it takes more than 24 hours to print and deliver mail. Frustration! Any ideas?

I Received my card today and called to activate. Talked to the CRS about the terms, she indicates that my card has 3.9% APR introductory and 1 Mile for every $2 on purchases. I don't remember my app offering an introductory APR. Don't get me wrong... I'm not complaining!!! I'm kinda wondering how long it'll last, but I don't want to rock the boat. What's your APR?

Reiflame, Did you get the annual fee of $60 waived after faxing in the infor?
Answer
I signed up for the United Visa card in June and got the 20,000 miles and was charged a $60 annual fee. (I had received a letter in the mail with the offer.) After reading this thread, I called Chase and pointed out their web page ad for the same offer but including a first year waived annual fee. The operator said she would put in a request for my first year annual fee to be waived, and the other day I got a letter from Chase saying they were waiving the fee, and would credit my account for the $60.00.
I am glad I saw this thread!

Hello. I've been a casual reader of FlyerTalk for awhile now and am finally joining the conversation today. Like many of you, I've received the targeted (?) 20,000 bonus miles for no annual fee United Visa Signature offer.
When I got it initially, I thought about it and then tossed it as I've been accumulating all of my miles on CO, DL and AS (Though I do have ~35K on UA).
They sent another one the other day and now I'm tempted to take them up on it. My questions for you:
a) Having never redeemed for reward travel on UA/SkyTeam, how does their availability compare to CO, DL, AS and respective partners? In particular, how is their availability for domestic, Mexico/Caribbean and Europe?
b) Does it make sense to take advantage of this offer and build miles on an airline I probably only fly once or twice a year or "give up" a few miles and snag the AmEx DL 17,500 offer again? (I've done that twice).
Any thoughts you might have are welcome. Thanks!

Another set of ignorant questions:
The $25 coupon to apply against fares of $200 or higher arrived today. Doesn't it cost $10 and a trip to the airport to redeem this certificate?
Attached was the 1,000 mile upgrade certificate. How, exactly, does this work? What if the flight is 1,001 miles? Do I get up and go sit in coach until the plane lands? Sorry to be so ignorant. I've schleped alot of miles in the back and only heard urban legends about the palace of unearthly delights 40 feet in front of me.

I just signed up for number two. I've had the first one since Nov. so I don't forsee a problem. Considering I get a pre-approval thing from them in the mail every month, I wonder why it takes them 30 days to process an internet application. I don't need the miles urgently anyway.
Answer
My Miles finally posted about a week ago, just had them transffered over to Diners Club (Take 4 weeks) via miles-to-points, from there they will eventually become 10,000k onepass miles :) , not bad considering i'm paying nothing since I plan to cancel the card after the 6 months time period is up.
If anyone else is interested in sending them to diners heres how:
1) Call 1-800-447-6772
2) Enter in Mileage Plus Account Info
3) When it asks for offer code punch in 015
Also they don't charge for the transfer, unlike AA who want $25 to do it

I'm not sure what the terms are on this offer. I have had UA visa's and they say I have 60 days to cancel from the time the annual fee posts. I usually always go under the companion flies free coupon offer when I open my cards. I don't know how this offer will compare. I did apply for this offer though. Waited a couple of days and a second set of cards came - this time with the wrong MP number. I called and requested a new set of cards with the correct MP number. Today those cards arrived - but again with the wrong MP number.
Called MP Visa again and they claim that the correct MP account number is referenced in their records. They will try a third time to get the MP number correct.

What's the waiting period to get the sign up bonus again? 6 months? Coming up on the one year mark of my 15K, first year free offer from a year ago and was thinking of cancelling that and applying for the 20K, first year free offer.

Should not be a problem. I believe some people have mentioned a 3 or 4 month waiting period.
Answer
Has anyone actually received bonus miles again (recently)? Verbage in T&Cs seems to give Chase a reason to not award the bonus miles again:
"This offer is valid for first time United Mileage Plus cardmembers only. You may be permitted to have more than one United Mileage Plus, First USA, or Chase Credit Card Account."
Answer
I just got 20K more on 9/23.
Answer
Reiflame, Did you get the annual fee of $60 waived after faxing in the infor?
Happy to report that the fee waiver showed up today after about 8 calls over a 2 month span. The trick is getting the customer service rep to send the request to the Mileage Plus department and no the "correspondence" department.
Am I the only one who thinks its funny that the correspondence department doesn't have a phone number or mailing address?
Answer
Well, I just applied so.... time to try UA again......

I have not followed every post in this thread so I hope it has not been mentioned before. Yesterday I got a postcard in the mail offering double miles on every purchae with no minimum from 11/15 to 1-14. Since my wife also has a seperate card (to benefit 20K promotion) so I asked about her and yes she also gets double miles. Meaning this is for everyone. ;)

Was registration required? If so, can you provide a link, phone number, and/or an offer code?
Thanks.

No Sir! There is no registration required. There is no link or offer code or phone number. Infact when I called to confirm, they could not verify this offer as I was giving them my old UA credit card # (15K miles with $60 fee) Then I asked about my new credit card (20K miles no annual fee first year) and there you go. My wife did not receive this post card as of taday so she called with her new credit card # and the CSR acknowledged that this offer stands for her too. I presume it is not targeted.

Reading back through some of this, thought I'd just add in my experience for the sake of others considering this:
Received a whole bunch of 20K mi + no annual fee offers, finally turned one in via mail. It took probably a month for me to be approved, which seemed very strange, much longer than I expected. Card arrived a day or two ago and didn't have the MP number on it, called back and spoke with someone who said they'd send out new cards with the number on it. It sounds like this is a common problem, strange that they can't figure it out. Oh well.
I'm figuring I'll collect the 20K, throw perhaps another big bill or two on there (I have a car insurance payment coming up) to just take care of some miles, and then will cancel at some point before the end of the year to avoid the fee. I'm new to this whole using-cards-for-miles thing, want to make sure I don't end up screwing myself here (either with my credit report or getting stuck with annual fees somehow).

I finally got my card in the mail, BUT it did not come with the "special bonuses" like the "Free One-way, 1,000 mile, One-class Upgrade Certificate" or "$25 United Discount Travel Certificate." Will those come separately???

My husband applied his card via the link posted on FT for the 20K bonus miles, no annual fee.
He got his card super fast, like in 5 calendar days, with his United Number embossed on the card.
The first billing cycle just finished. No bonus miles posted on the account, but also no annual fee being billed.
I applied mine via an invitation I received. My bonus miles posted with the first billing cycle.
Answer
My mom applied for this via solicited usps mail at the end of July. She just now (Nov) got a usps mail saying her acct was approved and that she'll be getting her cc shortly.
My husband applied via email link & got his card within a week. The 1st bill had 20K bonus miles & no annual fee.
