Answer
The LH Visa Card in the US is administered by MBNA and they have very high requirements usualy.
I suggest you give them a ring (1-800-932-2775) and discuss your matter, sometimes they can be helpfull.
If you transfered over to the USA and you had an american express card, there is an international transfer they do which could help to build your credit record faster.

Many banks will allow you to obtain a credit card guaranteed by money in an account with that bank (usually a savings account). The limit on the card is usually half the amount in the account. A good record on that credit card gets noticed in your credit record.
Sorry. I haven't researched which banks do this for a very long time. But this is how I got started, along with some then easy to get gasoline and department store credit cards.

This is called a secured credit card, and is the best way to build a credit history in the US if you're not a college student.
Bank of America offers a secured Visa card (http://www.bankofamerica.com/creditcards/index.cfm?template=cc_secured) where your credit limit is 100% of the amount you've deposited in a linked Bank of America savings account---anywhere from $250 to $10,000. The annual fee is only $29 and interest rate 16.24% APR if you need to borrow against your own money, both very competitive terms for secured cards. After a year or two, you'll be able to qualify for a standard unsecured credit card from most US banks.
Avoid the so-called "subprime" banks such as Cross Country, Providian, Household, and Aspire; these banks prey on people with poor credit history and often charge exorbitant fees for their secured cards.
Most local credit unions also offer secured cards if you're eligible for membership in one.
Good luck!

It seems very strange in this electronic age that US banks can't get access to your credit history from your old country of residence. Has a U.S. bank told you this?
Answer
The whole history with getting a cc in Israel is comlpletelly different from USA. In Israel a bank issues a card and hence he possesses all necessary information about me (like how much money I have and what is my overdraft limit). Moreover, there is no single point of access to request such info in Israel (like Credit bureau) so even if in my bank cancels my card I (theoretically:-) may get to another bank open another account there and ask for a card.
Now I'm in the middle of process getting my Lufthansa-joined card from MBNA. I'm waiting for my social security card and then have to fax all necessary docs to them (aproval from my job, home addres on any bill and a card).
I'll update you later if I get approval:-)
Answer

What I did is I explained I'm here for a job transfer I sent my offer letter SS card and a bill proving I'm living where I said. Now that you mention it, jfe, department stores are almost always pretty lax in granting credit cards to their customers. Discover hasn't been owned by Sears for a number of years (it's now part of Morgan Stanley) so they've probably tightened up their credit standards, but I've heard that some stores do "instant credit" promos where they give anyone and everyone a card without even running a credit report, usually with a $300 or $500 limit.
The interest rates on store cards are usually in the range of 20-25% APR, however, so it's wise to pay these off in full every month. :)
Answer
I still have the same $500 credit limit, and it has been 16 years ;)

Was in the same boat as you.... All you need to do is fax them a statement from your bank showing a balance, say of $100K or so and they will stand in line to print you CCs... They will give you 10-20 cents on the dollar in credit line... EASY AS AMERICAN PIE. :D
Answer
I came to US from England. My Uk bank have offices in the US and that was the obvious and painless choice for establishing credit.

I applied for the Discover Card for three years, since I was 18 until I was 21. I have never paid anything late in my life or have any derogatory information being reported on my credit bureaus. I've given up and I think its for the best. I am very happy with my AMEX cards.

That's when I would have called and closed it. Although, I've had my Capital One with a limit of $1,600 for a couple of years. I keep it because it is the easiest creditor to dispute something through. Whenever I don't feel 100% comfortable dealing with a particular merchant I use my Capital One card.
