Question
I apologize if this has been asked before - first time on the credit card thread.
I am wondering if Citi will waive the annual fee on an account that is used annually to the tune of about $50,000 (college tuition included) and is paid off in full each month. It has been my experience in the past that if I decide to cancel a fee based card to give the business to another credit card company they will often waive the annual fee to keep me.
Does anyone know if Citi does this?
Thanks!
Answer
I called to cancel 2 months ago and got a $25 credit. But I put a lot less than $50K/year on that card.
Answer
I tried to cancel my AAdvantage card they offered me (in this order)
1. 3,000 miles
2. $25 credit
3. Free companion ticket for US travel with purchase of any ticket $350 or more
I turned them all down, I wanted my annual fee moved back another 6 months (my friend had a promotion for 1 year with no annual fee, so giving me only 6 months wasn't fair) they told me they can't waive the fee or change the date.
Answer
I got my statement this week. I had stopped using the card, and I had made one return in the last 30 days. Basically, I had a zero balance, and "-58 miles earned." The annual fee should have been on this statement, but instead, I've got a line that says "membership Fee Jan 05 - Jun 05 ..... 0.00
So, maybe if you stop using the card in anticiapation of the annual fee, or make a return and have a negative milage balance, they'll comp the fee?
Answer
I just got my statement.
Same "membership Fee Jan 05 - Jun 05 ..... 0.00"
I've been using the card as usual.
And I have no desire to call and find out. ;)
I am AA Plat - I wonder if they waive the fees for elites (like UA MPVisa does for 1Ks)

I wonder if it makes a difference the type of card one has?
I had a Gold Level AAdvantage MC ($50 annual fee), and they offered me 2,000 miles or a $20 credit.
If SCtrojan held a Platinum level card (higher annual fee) it might explain why that offer was different/higher.

My renewal is coming up in March. I called them last year and said I wanted to cancel the card. They asked why. I said that with my Starwood Amex, when I transfer 20,000 miles to AA, they kick in another 5,000, so spending $20,000 nets me 25,000 miles. They offered me 4,000 miles to stay and I took it. I'm thinking of trying it again this year. If they don't bite, I will cancel (I have too many cards anyway).
Answer
Just look at what you cancel, when and how... cancelling a card with a fair line of credit could potentially affect your FICO (Fair-Isaac) score.
Answer
I called to cancel mine (Gold, $50 fee, around 20K spent last year mostly on giftcards) and got offer of 5000 miles.
I did bite this time, but have no good use for this card any more - that's what I mentioned to rep - since all my spending goes to Starwood + Citi's own dividend card for cashback.
Sadly, even among Citi card AAdvantage is a clear loser. They have Diners, new Travel card, Dividend, and AAdvantage don't ever runs any promos too...
Answer
This has probably been discussed in similar threads. But if you are a Citibank "Citigold" customer, they will waive the fee every year on both the Cit AA Mastercard and Diners Club cards. You need to have a minimum of $100,000 worth of capitol invested in stock, mutual funds, securities or in cash.
Answer
I called to cancel late last year and they waived the fee. However, it was in a round-about way. They mailed me a $50 credit voucher which I had to fill out a mail back to them. I guess they hope that some folks that are sent the voucher lose it or forget to send it back (like a rebate form). I would rather have had some extra miles, but I'll take the $50.
Answer
I have a Citi Biz card, which I do about $70K-80K a year on. I just had the annual fee post to my account. I called and told the customer service person I was thinking of cancelling. She transferred me to the retention dept. I told him that I was thinking of changing credit cards to get a free annual fee and bonus points offer. Without hesitation, he said "with the amount of charges you do I can just waive the fee without a problem." I thought for a second about asking him to throw in some bonus miles too, but didn't want to be too greedy :D I'll take the annual fee waiver.
Answer
I also have a citi biz card for which the fee had posted. I did not even ask to cancel the card, just asked if they would waive the fee or some other consideration, they waived the full $85 fee, I charged abt 46k last year
Answer
I called to cancel my card and they said they would send me a $50 voucher to mail back in which would essentially cancel my $50 amount.
Answer
Just canceled my card this morning. Was not offered miles or a partial rebate of the annual fee. Just a lot of talk about the Gold and Bronze level cards.
Can you get miles if you are re-apply (I assume after 6 months or so)?

Yes, but I don't know the rules for how long you have to wait. (Over a year for me.) I suggest you wait until just before the end of the current free 15,000 mile offer.
Answer
Just called up to try to have the fee waived on the Citi AAdvantage Platinum MC. I'm Citigold, and AA PLT, and they said flat out no.
So, now I wait a day and call back...
Has anyone had different results lately?

Citigold customers gets AAdvantage Plat fee waived. You have to call Citigold to get them to credit your account. Calling the CC does not help. They do not know the procedures.

^ ^ ^ Thank you, 00flyer00.
Just got thru calling Citigold, and the fee is gone. A simple request, 90 seconds on hold, and done.
Answer
I have found it very easy to get the fee waived upon request to cancel on the Business AAdvantage version of the card. Easiest of any card I have ever had. Only spent about 10k on the card.
Answer
I just cancelled mine sort of. I called first and said I wanted to cancel because of the annual fee and she gave me 5000 miles. Then I called in again and ask to cancel and they said I can switch to the Gold card and they will refund my $50 on my card, no voucher. So I got my 5000 miles and 50 bux back and she told me that I could reapply for another AA card to get the introductory miles.
Answer
I called today and they told me to take a hike. I have the card Platnium Aa for many years. We charge a ton to this card as well usually 100K+ or more per year. They told me to switch to a lesser card if I didnt want to pay fees. Any ideas. Should I call them again? If they even offered me the 5K miles I probably would have taken it. Reluctant to dump the card because I have it for may years.

Answer
I would call back and see if a different CSR will waive the fee. I had no problems waiving the fee. I've only had the card 1 year, and charge around 70-80K per year.
Answer
Haven't used it for 6 months. The card was 3 years old. They waived the fee. No miles.
Answer
I tried calling a few times today, and each time, it was the same story. Sorry, NO I can't waive the fee, and there are no promotions, no nothing. I asked if I upgrade to a higher card are there any bonus miles. NO.
On the last try, the rep answered the phone and was pleasant, when I told her I wanted to cancel my card, her tone changed to grouchy.
I've had the card for 5 years. You think they'd want to try to keep people.
Oh well.......
If I need more miles, I guess I can try to reapply next year.
Answer
I cancelled mine last week when they were bi*chy and rude. 2 days later a lady called me and said her group wasn't opened when I called, waved the fee or 7500 miles, whichever I liked.
Answer
I called last night to get the annual fee waived.
The representative said that was not possible and offered me 2000 miles to keep the card.
I declined and cancelled the card.
Answer
I called last week trying to cancel the card and hoping they'd give me a few bonus miles. I told them I was getting 15000 bonus sky miles with Delta instead. She did not budge!!
I guess I'll try late in the year?. If anybody has a good feel for how long it is before I apply, I'd love to hear it.

Tell me if I'm wrong. From the many posts here, I noticed this trend:
(1) If you have a business card, they are more likely to waive the fee.
(2) If you stopped using the card, they don't even post the fee to your statement. Or if they do, and you call, they'll probably waive the fee or give you some other incentive.
(3) If your card is not business, and they see that yiu charge a lot and rack up lots of miles... they'll tell you to take a hike.
(4) Perhaps they have a little mathematical model that tells the rep whether to waive the fee or not.
(5) Calling multiple times may not help if my points above are true. It may even hurt: they'll see on their screens that you called x times about the same issue, and will act annoyed.
What do you think of my interpretation? I hope I'm not pissing too far out of the bucket.
Answer
I think if you ask for the fee to be waived (without other Citi relationship), you will usually be told no. You have to say "cancel" and be willing to cancel. Then you get leverage.
That said, does anyone have any recent experiences before I call to cancexl next week?
Answer
they gave a crappy offer of companion cert (minimum ticket amount is $398 and for lower 48 only), or 0% balance transfer, or a bronze card. Turned them all down and then they moved the credit line on AAdvantage to Dividend card - big deal.

This doesn't make much sense. Usually, CC companies treat customers who charge a lot better. Atleast, I know AMEX does.:)

I agree with you . They _do_ treat you well. They are nice. But they still want the annual fee you agreed to pay when you signed up.
Answer
The reason they refunded my $85 dollar fee and gave me a $50 customer service credit to top it off was becuase of my history of 15k-30k worth of charges a month. This is what the CS told me that called my house 2 days after I cancelled the card.
Answer
Called today asked to cancel card,no luck, fee had been waived the last five years, asked to speak to supervisor, what a hard a--. No offer of miles.

JA_User: Is your card a business card, or a regular platinum visa? I charge 6K-7K a month, I thought it was a lot, but compared to your charges, it's peanuts.

Plat visa, I have to keep status on AA to charge with no yearly cap. :)
Answer
cancelled today. I was offered the $25 redit, then the 2,000 miles then the free 2 roundtrip tix domestic. Finally he offered a 1.9% check tied to the credit card that is a fixed rate for the life of the loan. Turned them all down.
Answer
So I said to cancel my account. Got transferred immediately to what I assume is "Retention".
Told next guy I wanted to cancel. He asked why, and if I was more concerned about money or points. I told him my specifically how my other programs were better, and told him it was all about the fee. He talked for a couple more minutes, and finally offered me a $50 voucher by mail that I have to fill out and return by mail. So net zero fee.
Answer
I got my personal Citi Aadvantage MC statement and it had the $100 annual fee on it. So I called to cancel and they offered $50 credit, 4000 miles, or companion ticket. That bugs me that it still costs $50/year, but I usually end up with at least 40,000 miles per year so it's worth it. Probably more this year, I charge $3-7k per month.
I tried to get more by saying I got the United card with 20k miles and no annual fee for the first year and they didn't budge.
Answer
I have the CitiAAdvantage Biz Plat card, charge ~90K / year. Simply called about getting fee waived due to volume charged, no prob, but ONLY for 'main' card NOT for sub accounts/cards @ $25 each. So still cost for additional, will probably use this year (waived fee + sub/cards paid for) then dump and wait for another mileage promo.
Answer
Last week, I tried to get the fee waived, but had no luck. I spoke to the people in Retention or wherever they transfer you when you say you want to cancel, and was offered first a companion certificate; then 5000 miles; then $35 off the fee ($85 fee). I said no to all of the above, and repeatedly asked if the whole fee could be waived or deferred. Very nice rep, but he assured me he had no authority to offer more, and also could not combine any of the above offers (miles + $35 etc.). So I cancelled.

Just out of curiosity, how much have you charged in the past year?
Answer
I have to ask... why do you all have the AA card with $50-100 annual fee when you could have an SPG Amex for $30/yr that transfers to AA at 1.25% when you transfer in 20K increments? 20,000 Starpoints transfer as 25,000 miles.
If you charge 100K a year, you are losing 25,000 points a year by having the AA card.

And with a Citigold account or better the annual fee is waived. And Some places dont take Amex.

I called to cancel my business card yesterday. They offered me a $75 statement credit. I accepted.
I'm wondering if I can call to cancel next week after my credit statement posts and try again...
Answer
I called about a month and threatened to cancel my AA citi advantage because of the annual fee. I chomped at the first offer of 2,000 miles. Maybe I should have held out longer for more freebies! Ha ha ha ha. I'd do it again but I actually don't want to cancel it bc it has a high limit. Between this card and my Citi Chairman I charge 6-8K a month.
Answer
I think it would help for people to post what their monthly or annual spending is and what they were offered. I posted a while back that I spend $12-$15K per month. I've had the card about a year and a half now. When my first annual renewal period came up I called and said that I was thinking of switching cards due to the high annual fee. The rep immediately said "Wow, you do a lot of purchases with this card. I can definitely waive the annual fee." Now, I don't know if I just got a good rep, but it was extremely easy for me to have the fee waived.
Answer
because not all places take an Amex card....
I certainly understand that and have a backup to my AMEX, obviously. But many here are talking about very large monthly sums. Unless these charges are all lump sums from places that don't take AMEX I'd think most people's spending would be at least 75% AMEX (I only *occasionally* find my AMEX isn't accepted when Visa/MC is)
So I'm not saying don't have it - especially with a Citigold fee waiver, but am I wrong in assuming that most are not limiting the AA card spending solely to places that don't take AMEX?
PS: Regarding the waived fee, AMEX will always waive the SPG AMEX annual fee if you spend a lot on the card, even though the fee is only $30 anyway

Must be very lucky Daveland I have both a Centurion and SPG card I charge on my Centurion well over $400K a year and about $80K a year on my SPG AMEX and I never been able to get American Express to waive any annual fee for me. Granteed my Centurion is grandfathered in at the $1K annual fee but still in 20 years I have had American Express they never once waived my orginal Gold/Platium/Centurion cards annual fee. Got my SPG card 3 years ago mainly because of Centuiron Card giving my SPG platium and get tons of SPG points by staying at the ST. Regis in NYC wanted a way to cap points as needed. I asked 2X now both times was told NO flat out on $30 waiver.
Answer
I asked 2X now both times was told NO flat out on $30 waiver.
There's a thread on the SPG board about this... basically, many don't find it worth the effort, though i do ;-) , but you have to call and ask to speak to the Retention department. A regular CSR can't waive the fee. The retention person can *easily* either credit you the fee or give you some Starpoints (usually 3K, which is worth more than $30 anyway). All you have to say is basically "Look, with the volume of spending I do on this card, I think it's outrageous to charge a fee." I'm 3 for 3 on this. This of course just for the SPG card, not Cent. cards...
Answer
I did not succeed to receive any offer/bonus for renewing my card when I asked. Eventually, I got to cancel the card and reply apply it again to get the bonus.
Answer
Just out of curiosity, how much have you charged in the past year?
I only had it for about 7 months, since when I signed up the best deal around was 6 mos/no fee. Charged around $10-12K. Not much compared to many people here (in a non-profit, not a lot of work expenses). Bigger spenders may get better treatment.
Answer
Well, just found the $85 membership fee on my AAdvantage Platinum posted yesterday. I called and requested to cancel. The customer service rep. transfered me to an account manager. After 5 minutes of feeling him out to see what I would get if I decided to cancel, he said I had 30 days to decide if I wanted to cancel and they would refund my $85. When I told him I'll just cancel right then, he offered me $35 credit to offset the difference between a Gold and Platinum AAdvantage card. Nothing more. Of course I took it. He still said I had time to decide what to do.
I might try calling back tomorrow to see if I get offered any miles.

Did you call back? Did they give you more? Historically I have found that once you accept an offer from them they do not give any more as it's all noted on your file what you took etc.... but I suppose it's worth a shot!
