Question
I'm thinking of switching to Capitol One VISA (instead of my current UA Mileage Plus). Any info on ease of cashing in miles? Restrictions, etc? Appreciate any input.
Answer
Wilma,
Welcome to out Flyertalk world. I'm going to move your question to the VISA forum (automatically), where I expect some of the lurkers over there have comments on Capitol One.
Personally my in-laws use it, and the "cost" of awards seems high to me.

please check the fine print carefully
i believe what you get is a ticket or $x credit towards a ticket
for instance using FF miles with UA its 50k for a free trip to europe, if there is seat availbility
with Cap one they will get you the seat if its $500 or less
otherwise you will get $500 credit towards the ticket
i'm unsure if the award any bonuses like the airline cc do
Answer
You should consider the *wood Amex card.

Thanks a lot for your answer, and for forwarding my question. The answers seem to indicate it's not worth it, as the redemtion cost seems higher than other airline cards. Someone suggested Amex, but I've found the restrictions on available seating quite prohibitive.

Thanks for the suggestion, but how what is the *wood Amex card? We have the usual Amex card, and the restrictions on seat availability are really annoying. I have limited travel freedom, as I'm a school principal and have to travel when everyone else does (unfortunately!!).

Check out Citibank PremierPlus Elite MasterCard. I have the Amex Starwood card, which I use when I have to use Amex, e.g., in Costco. But overall, the PremierPlus Elite beats all of these other cards, in large part due to the doubling up of actual miles flown, regardless of airline, along with the triple points for pharmacy, grocery and gas sales.

:) Thanks a lot for the suggestion! I'll definitely check it out.

The way it works now is basically $1 = 1 point. 9000 points = $100 rebate on whatever ticket you buy on the card. So if you put a $300 ticket on the card and have at least 27,000 points they will rebate you the $300, you just need to go online and fill out a form for the rebate.
I've done it a few times since they chaged the rule a year or so ago without any problems.
Answer
There have been two write ups recently in the Washington Post concerning Capitol One and your FICO score. Evidently when Capitol One reports your credit card account to the 3 major credit bureaus they report your balance but do not report your credit limit to the bureaus. In cases when a credit card does not report your credit limit the calculation for your FICO stores assumes that you current balance is your credit limit and thus calculates your score assuming that you are at 100% utilization of your credit limit. This impacts badly on your credit score since being at 100% of your limit is a bad thing as far as FICo scores are concerned. Now if you have a lot of other credit cards that do report your limit and that you have a very low utilization rate on those cards then the negative impact of the Capitol One information will probably not make a big difference but if you have a very limited credit history I would not do it
