Question
Recently I decided to cancel my Signature Visa with USAir since the renewal fee was $90 and building more miles with US right now doesn't look like the smartest thing in the world to do. When I called I was forwarded to an account manager who after some initial talk offered to credit me $45 against the fee if I did not cancel. Since I do travel on USAir occasionally due to good nonstop opportunities that I can't find elsewhere, I decided to take the offer to get the preferred check-in, complimentary Club pass, the $99 companion ticket and the opportunities for 5000 mile discounts on some award travel. (Preferred boarding seems useless with the new zone boarding system on US and I will not be charging much, if anything, on the card so the 10K base miles for $25K spending is irrelevant.) A friend who uses the card less was offered only a $30 credit not to cancel. I thought others might like to know that a credit on the renewal fee is possible. Any thoughts on the wisdom of my decision?

Along those same lines..............is it possible to get a refund of the annual charges if US liquidates? The card would be 100% useless in that case so I don't see how they can charge you for the card. I wonder this since I have a few Bank One UAL CC's and I would want a refund if UAL liquidates for some reason. Or am I just dreaming/fantasizing that I would get a refund. I have read that Bank One is one of UAL's main creditors and I'm sure the Bank One/UAL CC must play into that somehow. If Bank One had to give $60 refunds to hundreds of thousands of UAL cardholders, that money would add up quickly so they have quite a big stake in UAL staying afloat. Any opinions?
