Question
I had a horrible experience saturday with bankOne. Tried to charge $2700 with a merchant where I have had karge charges many times before on same card. Charge was denied (plenty of credit was avbl) and i called the 800 number on my card. I was on hold for 38 minutes before i got someone to lift the block which they said was 'for my protection". I called back and complained and asked for some Rapid reward credits to compensate me for the hassle and my time and was refused. Once I get my ompanion Pass in two monthes through large charges i am cancelling this card.
Answer
:td: I've had the same problem with the BO Rapid Rewards Visa and their timing is UNBELIEVABLE!
This past day after Thanksgiving I was checking out from a 200 person line in Best Buys (with 3 very limited in number items) and the card was denied. I stepped to the side of the line and dialed Customer Service for Bank One. I screamed at the rep because I have immaculate credit and I was steaming. I got an excuse that a transaction had been made via the Internet to the UK and that they were "protecting" me.....b@##$%^t! I told her that they were out to protect only themselves since I'm only responsible for $50 in unauthorized charges. I told her that the charge was made by my hubby (true) and that they'd better OK my Best Buys purchase or else I'd be on the phone to every Southwest higher up I could find a # for and I'd personally make sure that Bank One was replaced--I have no such power, but it sure felt good to say. After 5 minutes of screaming (and that after 5 minutes of waiting to get through), she came back to tell me that they'd taken the hold off of my account and credited me with my yearly fee for the inconvenience.
I told her it better not happen again--but it did last month in Alaska. We were buying ferry tickets--$350 worth. Card denied. I call CS. Another charge to the UK for $26 (again, legit via Ebay/PayPal). CS says OK, hold is off, go ahead and charge tix. I said tough nuggies--I already used another card and lost 350 credits for RR. He can't do anything about that--no duh!
I have other cards and this never happens. Clearly BO doesn't want to have any unauthorized charges run up to any degree, so they make my life hard. I'm seriously thinking about changing over to another card that will allow me to convert other points to RR points--just so I can get away from BO. I shouldn't have to avoid international purchase, or call every time I make one, just to keep them happy. They're there to make ME happy, not vice versa.
Answer
After my incident, I emailed Bank One telling them what had happened and asking for some bonus rapid reward points. They wrote me back and gave me 1600 RR dollars which translates into 1.25 rapid rewards.

Sometimes this does not work, either. I bought a $16,000 swingset (don't ask!) on the RR Bank One Card. I called in advance not once but twice. The card was still denied. Over the course of three days and numerous disconnects they finally approved the charge.
They still have not credited the four RR credits which should accrue after the first purchase. This has been under "investigation" for some time with WN and Bank One each asserting the other is responsible.
