Question
Hi All,
I'm a newbie to FlyerTalk, and have been "lurking" for a while. What a great website! And what an incredible amount of useful information!
I have a question I hope you experienced FFs can help me with. I'm trying to decide between 2 credit card offers from United, where I have most of my miles:
Offer 1: 20K miles signup bonus after first purchase (thanks FT for alerting me to this!)
Offer 2: 5K signup bonus with a free companion ticket. Paid ticket must cost more than $299.
Both cost $60 per year, same interest rate, other features identical. My husband and I both enjoy travel but will probably never make "elite" status. Free ticket would seem to be better, since I would "only" be giving up 15k miles for it, which is less than the mileage needed for a free ticket. But am I missing something?
What would all you FFs recommend?
Thanks for your help!

You are going to get a lot of differing answers on this one. I would go for the miles and then let them accumulate with your credit card usage.
Answer
Or consider Offer 3: 15k miles signup, first year annual fee waived.

Answer
Check out the fine print--do you normally fly anywhere that costs $299 or more? Since most places in the continental US (depending on your home airport) can be visited for less than $299, it looks like you may be having to pay more for the regular ticket than you normally would, and there may be restrictions on the dates/places you can use the companion ticket. (i.e., is the free companion good only in the continental US?) (I don't know the answers, just giving you things to consider.)
Answer
Go for the 20k offer, accumluate miles, and use them to upgrade to FC.
