MP Visa double miles offer... I don't get it

Question
This past weekend I got an mailing from MP for a "Double Miles for 12 months" promo. It's an offer to earn double miles from July 1, 2004 through June 30, 2005 in 10 categories. This sounds great -- until you read the fine print. The offer says:
"Use your Mileage Plus Visa to make purchases in any of these categories(dining out, groceries, gasoline, utilities, dry cleaning, wireless phone service, pharmacy items, home improvement, movies & refreshements, and video rentals) and earn Double Miles for every dollar spent above $350 each month for these purchases."
It seems to be a "customized" or targetted offer because the "$350" seems to have been filled in later (the ink is slightly different). Now, keep in mind: the offer says you'll earn double miles for every dollar SPENT ABOVE $350...(in addition to the regular ones).
So while it appears that if I use my MP card almost exclusive, I'll rake in lots of miles, the opposite is true: basically, if I spend $400 in a month, I'll get the 400 regular miles, but the double miles would apply ONLY to $50 (the amount "spent over $350") and as such, I'd end up getting 450 miles... not 800 miles like someone would think if they read this quickly. It doesn't seem like such a great offer, then, especially considering how high the minimum is. Heck, I could get double miles on my Delta AMEX on most of these purchases without the minimum $350 restriction!
Am I reading this right? Did anyone else get this offer? What do you think?

Answer
My offer was for $450/month

Answer
I got a similar letter but from British Airlways visa card and the double mile offer is for the same category of spending only after $ 1000. This is a rip off

Answer
I received the mailer about this double miles offer yesterday. Pretty cool promo! Most generous one I've seen in awhile.

Mine said $150 per month.

mine said $100/mo.
What's more interesting is what's everyone's spending pattern with the card. So in the future we can have some idea what it takes to have a low/no limit.
I purchased $1000s worth of savings bonds with the card, then haven't used it since then till june when I bought $700 worth of plane tickets. I guess I'm once a big purchaser...then kind of lapsed since then...so my limit is _relatively_ low so they want to entice me to spend more/pay another year's worth of annual fee.
what was your spending pattern socal :)

Sorry -- I was blind! I looked this flyer over quite a few times and all of a sudden noticed the $250 threshold. I spend anywhere between $500-$1,000 a month on the card.

Answer
You can not just look at what your monthly balance is. Remember, VISA has excluded, unless I am reading things wrong, items such as airline and hotel charges. It does appear that they do include "general merchandise stores".

Answer
Consider yourself lucky. Mine is $2300/mo. It sucks I DON'T get rewarded for using my card more often.

Answer
And I didn't get an offer at all :(

Answer
OK. Thanks.

Answer
Hey Clusters78, is it easy to convert the savings bonds to cash? Where did you buy them?
:)
This was last year when savingsbonds.gov still took credit cards.
I applied for the visa in mid-august, got it in september and bought several thousands worth of savings bonds right away, haven't used it since till recently. I think that's why so far I have the lowest double-miles threshold ($100) of the folks here, since I seem like a potential big spender that's taking a break from their card.
Ironically I'll probably just cancel the card rather than take advantage of this offer...I can get 5% back on groceries, gasoline, and pharmacy purchases with the citibank card, and my spending in rentals/cell/dry-cleaning etc just won't add up to much more than $100/mo to make paying another year of annual fee worthwhile.

Answer
On my BA Visa card the limit was $2300, so I would get the double miles only after that. I actually called them and told that it was ridiculously high, but they wouldn't budge, so I'll just keep using my Starwood Amex.

Answer
It would be to the airlines advantage to insure that these type of "fine print offers" were stopped...It is their name on the Visa Card and customers feeling they are being ripped off isn't something the airlines need with the coming competition from discounters.
The answere always seems to be that it is Visa not us..That is BS the airlines can get virtually any bank to sponsor their charge card...It is their name not the bank involved and not Visa that shows who to blame.
Expect more bank scams now that congress is trying to exempt "National Banks" from State consumer protection laws. There goes the your only responsible for $50 of a fraud charge you didn't report before your second statement after the frad charge.

Answer
Their offer to me was double miles above $150/month. I had not used the card for some month. Was perhaps to entice me using it again.?

Answer
And they haven't made me an offer at all. I guess they figure I spend enough anyway.
I shouldn't complain though - they have a double miles for all school fees offer (double miles after $1000) and I just put $10K of school expenses through the card - so that worked out well.
I also will use my Citi Dividents card for 5% back on groceries and gas - so I'm not really losing anything.

Answer
Anyone else having trouble getting the double miles? I just noticed that the miles posted but were significantly less than what should have appeared - even considering the 650 mile threshold. When I e-mailed asking for clarification they just sent back a note talking about the threshold and listing the categories that would get the double miles.

Me neither. But mine is the College MP visa. Would that be why I didn't receive this offer?
