Any luck getting annual membership reduced?

Question
I just got my renewal for one one my Citibank credit cards.
The renewal was $125!
I charge a lot on these credit cards ($150K+).
Can anyone offer advise on how to get these fees reduced or cancelled?

Just say that you want to cancel it. They usually transfer your call to their customer membership department; and the CSR will be gladly to retain your business for giving you some perks either by giving you some miles/points, reducing the fee or waiving the fee altogether. Just ask.

Answer
Or they may just go ahead and cancel it like Amex does. Some companies just don't care...

The other day I called to cancel one of my VISA First cards. They offered to waive the fee and give some limited miles.

Answer
I contact Citibank about four months ago when my annual was ready to renew. I stated that I would be willing to renew if I could have AA points. I was transferred to a "retention manager" who told me I would be given points for renewing. I did not request a reduction or waiver of the annual fee. Three months went by without any points posting. I was told the delay was due to something "holding up" the approval, a change of unknown type preventing the approval. I didn't say anything but realized it was due to my asking for a reduction in my APR% earlier this year. I called several times and finally received 5,000 points. I do over $80k annually. I called AMEX to ask the same for my DL/Plat card. I was told no and instructed to enjoy all of the wonderful benefits of the card. I said "thanks!" and told the rep that in return I wanted to cancel my Platinum card. I was transferred to a Plat rep and canceled the card. I still have the DL/Plat card as I'm waiting for the promo points to post on by Oct. 15th.
