Any way to tell if establishment coded as restaurant?

Question
Is there any way to tell if a particular establishment is "coded" by VISA as a restaurant? I'm wondering if an establishment like a country club, that also happens to have a facility within it that serves food and/or hosts weddings, would code as a restaurant or something else.

All credit card companies use SIC codes to determine the type of establishment it is

Answer
The previous post is correct. In the past when i have orderd addtional past statement copies the sic code was included on the statment for each charge!...I can just imagine how helpful this for any type of audit.

Hate to tell you this but you're not correct...I didn't say they told you the SIC codes but I can guarantee that's what VS/MC/AX/DS all use to tell the type of establishment you're dealing with......come to think of it I've never had to pay my bank for this info...must be the bank you're dealing with

Answer
What are you talking about!? I did not say they charge for this information. The sic codes are reveald when I order a back copies of prevouse monthly statements which I have done for record keeping. All I was stating is that they have SIC codes on each merchant. I also stated this helps with audits, be it a government agency or private company where the job is often to clasify an expense correctly.

Answer
So will a call to VISA provide the necessary information for a particular establishment?

Depends on your issuing bank.....most do make it easy to obtain but I'm sure there are a few that do not

Answer
Another way might be to check your account via the web - both my AE and Visa accounts show the type of transaction next to the individual charge so you can see how a transaction is posted.

Answer
You are going to have a very dificult time at best trying to identify the merchant classification without an existing charge from the merchant on your account for them to look up. Amex may be a little easier than visa since they can look up merchant # easier but then they could be coded different. A good example would be Home Depot which is sometimes clasified as "home improvement" and other times "buidling supplies".
