Question
I was all set to cancel my regular MBNA card and go to Hilton Visa but the MBNA service rep convinced me to check out www.mbnaworldcard.com. (http://www.mbnaworldcard.com.) Looks pretty good. I think it's a new program. Anyone checked this out or have any experience with this?

I actually have the card. It's a newly launched card as of July 15th. The plastic design is pretty. In terms of customer service, I have been displeased and have considered canceling this card. The WorldPoints program for me is silly. You can't transfer to frequent flyer/hotel programs and the rewards offered don't entice me.
Additionally the no pre-set spending portion is very limited. With my Citi World MasterCard I was granted a $10,000 limit and often brought it as high as $16,000 without fanfare however with MBNA (I've been a member since 1999) I tried bringing the card just $1,000 over and they stopped me and said no more, until paid down. Not much "financial flexibility" if you asked me.
The benefits are standard and I still prefer CapitalOne over MBNA anyday. Can't complain much, fair fixed APR, low intro, and no fee.
Answer
I think the Citi HHonors Visa Signature is a better product because the points never expire as long as there is activity (charging) every 6 months. You can do much more with Hilton points than with World MC points. Free car rental upgrades and lost luggage insurance are nice extras as well.

Has anyone gotten a deal in the mail from these guys offering 0% cash advance for 6 months? My friend signed up with it and was delighted to get the free money for 6 months and also i read about this in Kiplingers!
I did some searches online no luck at all, i guess this is a targeted thing too.

I tried calling MBNA for you, and was advised that MBNA doesn't have that offer available. I even spoke with the telesales dept and they assured me, not even through direct solicitation. Then again they once told me something wasn't true, and I found it elsewhere.
I snagged 1.70% through Feb 2003.
Answer
MasionUnitas I appreciate your help and input! I have called MBNA as well and was confirmed that no such offer existed even though i told them that a friend of mine signed up with it... oh well i guess i'll keep an eye on those junk mail http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Answer
I've called Carlson at least 4 times since I signed up for this card. No one at Carlson has heard of Worldpoints or the World Card and they don't have any idea how to redeem points. I called Worldcard customer service and told them this and they couldn't believe it, but as of today there is no way to redeem your points for travel.
Answer
I have a MBNA NEA master card now and pay $40-$45? fee for the "travel rewards" program. The World Card appears to give me the same benifits without the fee. I just appplied for it and we will see.
I asked and they would not let me transfer my "travel reward points" from my NEA card to the new World card. So I have to use and probably pay another year's fee to be able to redeam the points for a trip. I have 21,000 points now and my renewal date is end of September.
But what I can do is transfer my line of credit from one to the other, when the time comes to close the NEA card.
The MBNA person I signed up with mentioned a benifit of getting a free travel compainion ticket after charging $5000. Has anyone else heard of this??
Answer
There's also the MBNA Amtrak Rewards card that earns points toward Continental and UA miles: one to one ratio.
Additionally, there's no annual fee. I have one and I think it is definitely worthwhile.
Answer
I just got this card and I was wondering if the no pre-set spending limit was similar to the AMEX charge cards ? If you're going to make a big purchase that would exceed your revolving line could you call and tell MBNA ahead of time so that the charge would be approved ?
Answer
I've tried to get a straight answer from MBNA many time and it is obvious they have no idea how these cards normally work. I'm always told that you may be able to go over a couple hundred dollars but that is all.
I have a Citibank Worldcard and I can charge 5 times my line of credit.
Answer
As I have previously stated in my post, MBNA offers no financial flexibility. Scrog is correct and they only allow a few hundred.
My Citi World MasterCard allows me to go over several times my credit line, however again this week MBNA canned me and prevented me from even hitting $500 over my limit. I am going to cancel as soon as 1.7% is over with. MBNA took the "World" away from "World MasterCard".
Answer
What about the concierge services? HHonors VISA does not have this.
I have not found another World MC which does not have an annual fee...
I only got this card as a back-up to my AMEX SPG card, and b/c I need it for Hyatt's FFN.
What do you think?
Answer
The concierge service is pretty good. I recently requested them to find a rare item for me and they found it really fast. I think it's the same people who also service the Quantum card (Quantum concierges).
I also have the Citi HHonors Visa Signature card and I think you can get concierge service from this one as well, but it's through Visa, not Citibank. I think the number is there in your Visa Signature benefits booklet.
Answer
I had the MBNA NEA Mastercard up until last December when they decided to increase all of their reward levels. It is my understandiang that the NEA rewards are now the same as their World MC card. I had no problems redeeming rewards through Carlson. In fact, it seemed that all of my travel documents came from Carlson in Boise, ID. They were very good to deal with and would permit changes even after reservations were made. You can't re-deposit points, but I found a better rate on Disney lodging, for example, and they went well above and beyond changing the reservation despite their many calls to Disney. The same occurred on some lodging I booked in New York using points. The reason I canceled the card is becuase the increase in point requirements and their decrease in the maximum allowable rates/fares were no longer attractive compared to other cards on the market. The plus is that you earn frequent flyer/stay miles when booking through them.
Answer
My wife and I both had NEA cards and we both changed to Worldcards. You are right, benefits are the same and no fee. There isn't any reason at all that I know of anymore to have an NEA card. But even with the new rate structure the Worldcards are a good backup for our other cards. All of the rewards are better than a penny per point and in places like New York the car rental rate comes out to be 2.4 cents per point.
Carlson knows about the Worldcard now and they are very easy to deal with.

is claiming that you get 2.4% cash rebate from "MBNA TRAVEL REWARD PLUS" by way of redeeming the points for car rental and later canceling it.
Is this the same card ?
How much credibility in this statement - this is a first post for the poster ?

Came across this old post while searching for car rental insurance coverage with Visa.
I have this World Card and it came with a cash advance (interest free $50 fee) for about 9 mos (Feb 2004). So I consolidated accts.
I noticed this card offers Primary rental car coverage in Italy--only if you deny any CDW offered. It does exempt coverage in a few other countries but not Italy like some other credit card companies. The person at the cc insurance dept says that Italy only requires theft coverage, not CDW. Any opinions on this?
Answer
I recently rented in italy. The government requires theft coverage. Some compaines will not rent unless you take their CDW as well. It is difficult to discuss interpretations of legalities with rental clerks who get incentives when they sell you extra coverage. My rate included CDW with a high deductable. I did not see any full CDW (no deductable) available from Europcar.
Answer
Thanks for answering. I am wondering if you had a prepaid rental car through Europcar? We did that route on the last Italy trip through AutoEurope that was inclusive of CDW so we were unable to turn CDW down at the rental desk. AutoEurope had sent us a voucher.
This trip the rental is so much more expensive so I digging deeper for savings.
Answer
I did not have a prepay. It was a company paid trip using company credit card with company specific rate with Europcar.
Best way to drive in Italy and save money is to rent in Germany. I had no problems with credit card insurance there.
