Question
FYI. I just recevied a notice from Chase that they are discontinuing their Shell gasoline bank cards, which offer rebates for free Shell gasoline.
As of January 26, 2003, Shell "will no longer be participating with Chase in a credit card program." The notice indicates that Chase will substitute some kind of rebate program of their own at that time.
Its not clear from the notice if Shell will be partnering with another card issuer.
Answer
Given the fact that Shell is tge high price leader -usually charging about 10-15% more for their gas- I have never understood why anyone would buy Shell gas or use the credit card. I doubt the free gas compensates for the outrageous price charged in the first place. I'm always amazed to see a few people in a Shell station across the street from a competitor who charges 15 cents a gallon less.

Perhaps, that is a regional phenomenon, because in my area Shell charges about the same as the rest (sometimes, a couple cents higher, sometimes a couple cents lower than the competition).

I was initially concerned about this price difference, too. But our local Shell station is next to a former name-brand station (now independent) and stays competetive with the other stations near-by. Pricing seems to be influenced a lot by location and any competion next door.
Answer
I wonder how our outstanding gas rebate will be treated after Shell discountines participating in Chase rebate card program...
Answer
One thing that I like about the Shell MC is the 5% rebate on gasoline purchase. In SF Bay Area, regular unlead goes for about $1.80/gal. 5% back knocks about 9c off the price. And that seems to be the difference between Shell and other no-name brands. I always go to the stations which offer free car wash with min 8 gal fill up to make me feel better.
One other thing, if you go to Shell's website, they hint that they will launch another gas rebate card after the Chase program ends. If you like the Shell card, stay tune.
I use to use the Shell MC as my primary card. But I deflect to mileage/points based card nowadays as I usually value a mile as 1.3c. So a mileage based card is a better deal for me.

I don't know how you plan to end this, I will wind down the rebate balance to exactly $0.00 and cut the card up.

Here in Southwest Florida Shell charges the same as everyone else except BP. BP seems to come in a tad cheaper than everyone else.
But there are only a couple BP stations in my area, and they're inconvenient. I almost always use Shell.

I just went to the shell.com website and eventually found a link to US credit cards.
I believe I found the Shell statement you mentioned, located on the page for the Shell Mastercard from Chase:
"An Important Note About The Shell Master Card:
Shell is committed to its industry-leading rebate and will continue to offer the same value proposition beginning the first quarter 2003 to new card applicants. For updated information, please check back with us online in late January 2003. Thank you for your interest."
Answer
Yup. That's the page I was referring to.
If the new card gives 5% back with no annual fee, I might consider re-applying. Otherwise, I'll be content with my mileage based cards.

Anyone received a request to verify information by sending copies of SS# and driver's license?
Answer
No, I have not.

From whom did you receive this request? Chase? Shell? Why did they ask?
I don't recall ever receiving such a request from a credit card issuer.
Answer
I believe no credit card issuer send such a request.
Such request is only involved with fraud, I think.

Agreed. I've never had a card issuer make such a request. I did once receive a call asking for clarification on a card application, but I've never had to send in copies of documents or ID.
PS - I stand corrected. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/redface.gif Steve M's reply was very instructive. Thanks.
Perhaps I was focusing only on the potential fraud aspects of such a request. I would be concerned if a card issuer asked me to send copies of my driver's license and SSN card. That might mean there was an identiy theft issue.
I have been asked for additional supporting financial information when applying for second mortgage, but this was always done in person.

I disagree. I'm familiar with at least two situations that refute your assertion:
1. I personally know someone that applied for a credit card with a bank, and was asked for further proof of identity. It seems that the bank had already issued a credit card account to someone else who gave the same Social Security Number. The bank was somewhat suspicious, as they apparently had a customer in good standing having another name but the same SSN. They wanted proof that the new applicant was the legitimate holder of the given SSN.
2. I recently applied for a credit line increase from Amex. Here is an excerpt from the response I received:
We appeceiate your interest in a line increase on your American Express Card Account and would like to process your application as soon as possible. Before we can finish your application, we need to have you provide the following information:
- Complete copies of your past 2 years signed personal tax returns.
- A copy of your most recent checking, savings, money market, and brokerage account statemet(s) showing average monthly balance.
- A copy of your most recent IRA and other retirement savings statements.
As I had recently requested a credit line increase, I have absolutely no doubt that the request for more information came from Amex. By the way, I chose to stay with my current credit line rather than provide such detailed information to Amex.
So, it's entirely possible that such a request is legitimate, for any of several good reasons. If you have any doubt, call a known-good customer service number for your account and verify that the request for information is authentic.

anyone has any update?
is Shell going to someone else?
Answer
As per a rumor from fatwallet.com, Citibank will replace Chase on the Shell credit card program... Announcement is expected on 1/27/03.
Answer
It is a bad idea that they are waiting till 1/27/03 to announce it. not giving us enough time to apply for the new card.
Answer
Well, I just received a letter from Chase about the replacement card - Chase Freedom MasterCard. The letter said they will release the information about the new program on that same date by logging onto here (http://www.chasefreedombenefits.com). And the new card will arrive by the middle of February.

what I really wanted to know is which card will SHELL issue, not Chase. I am interested in 5% back thing.
Answer
Somebody on FatWallet.com had found this link (https://www.accountonline.com/BKCD_SHELL/Login). Click on the "Rebates $" box on the upper right hand corner and you'll find out the new Citi Shell MasterCard will look mighty similar to the soon expire Chase Shell MC.

Consider yourself lucky, Upperdeck. I just yesterday got my notice in the mail about the discontinuance of the program on 1/26; much too late to do anything to avoid losing the benefits I thought I'd earned for the past 21 days of my current billing cycle which will not close until after 1/26. Chase is the absolute pits to deal with in my experience. Mostly they just totally ignore you. I've written to them twice in the past 2 years about poor or erroneous customer service, most recently through Planet Feedback, and they just never respond except to acknowledge they received your correspondence. Citibank, on the other hand, which now picks up this program, has been extremely responsive when I've alerted them to problems. Could this have factored into Shell's decision to dump Chase? Probably. It seems that Chase has a reputation for poor customer service.
Answer
strange, can't find any info on Shell's or Citi's web site. but the above link worked great, guess they are waiting till 1/26 to put the info online.
Answer
I just recently received the letter as well and was told by CSR from Chase that the program ends on 1/27/2003 and the program will be moved to Citibank. In case if you still want to keep the chase card, there are several other reward programs Chase offer. NO 5% but better than nothing. One is the Ultimate Reward (offers gift certificate or reward travel including airlines and hotels about 1% return first year free You DO have to ask for it and get a nice agent to help you. There after is $25) clear rules stated on chase's website except the annual fee part. For anyone who carries balance there is program by Chase called cash builder, you do need to get a new account number but for anyone carries over $500 balance get 2% cash back if for none balance carriers or carries less than $500 in any given month, you get 1% cash.
Answer
when can we apply for the Citi Shell card. I guess I won't be getting Shell Gas between 01/27 and whenever I get my new Citi Shell Card.
Answer
Finally it's the 27th. This is what I was offered by Chase for the new card:
5% on all of your gasoline purchases... on any brand of gasoline.
1% on all of your other purchases.
And as one of the first Chase Freedom cardmembers, you'll earn a 6% rebate on all gasoline purchases posted to your account through March 31st, 2003!
The rebates you earn each month are automatically credited towards your future purchases. Spend your rebates anyway you like!
You'll receive your new card and program details by mid-February. You are already earning valuable rebates. Use your Shell MasterCard® or Visa® card from Chase until you receive your new Chase Freedom card.

Are you sure your offer is 5% on all gasoline purchase, mine is only 3%. That's not fair! Besides that, everything is identical to the old Shell MasterCard.
Answer
The offer I see when I log on is 3% on all gasoline purchases and 1% on all purchases.
The 6% rebate through March 31st is also listed.
Answer
The card is going to be issued by Citibank. From the Citibank press release:
"To encourage consumer applications, Citi Cards is doubling the card’s regular 5 percent rebate on Shell gas purchases as part of an introductory program for those that apply for the new Shell MasterCard by March 31, 2003. New cardholders will receive a 10 percent rebate on each Shell gasoline purchase made within the first 60 days of the card’s activation. This would be a rebate of 14 cents per gallon based upon a recent national average1. After the 60-day period, the rebate reverts back to the industry-leading 5 percent on Shell gasoline purchases and 1 percent on all other retail purchases wherever the card is used. All rebates are applied as credits toward future Shell gasoline purchases."
Pretty good!

More info from the press release...
Consumers who have the old Shell MasterCard need to reapply if they want to take advantage of the introductory offer and continue to receive this industry-leading gasoline rebate.
The Shell MasterCard from Citi Cards has no annual fee for the first year. After the first year, the annual fee will be waived when nine Shell gasoline purchases are made each year.

5% for me. My roommate also got 3%. I guess that is why you have to enter your card # for the benifits to show up. Something else is different from the old card is that you can redeem the cash back on any new charges (instead of just gas).

One small undocumented "feature" which will prevent me from using that card: on the old Shell card payment were first applied on Shell charges, then on everything else. This way I had a transferred revolving 0% balance and could still use the card for gas.
NOT ANY MORE !
Payments are now applied first on the "lowest interest", so in my case I will incure 17.99 % interest charges on any purchases.
As of new Citi Shell card - looks like they want us to apply for this new account. I have couple of idle Citi cards, so I called (twice) and asked to change it into Shell account - no dice, "it's a different bus unit". I pressed and even closed one account, still nada.
Sigh...
