Question
I signed up for a United Mileage plus credit card on line a couple of days ago for the 10,000 miles bonus. Today in the mail I received and offer for 15,000 miles! I tried to call the number to see if I could change offers but it must be after hours. Has anyone had luck doing this? I also forgot about the referral bonus. Hopefully I can add that as well.
Answer
Can you post the number from the offer?
What is this referral bonus business?

See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum122/HTML/001707.html for info on referral bonus. I called about the 15,000 mile bonus and they asked if I was the person listed on the certificate so I suspect it is targeted. The number though is LAC23922. I will cancel my on-line application card when I receive it (I was told that once the process is started it cannot be cancelled). Now I wonder how I can get the 20,000 mile bonus!

sgosline: when i learned about double miles through 10/31, i too jumped the gun by mere days before the mail arrived with the 15K offer. at first i tried to withdraw or cancel the 10K applicatoin in process, but no can do on account of systems limitations. so i called the number of the 15K offer flier and it accepted my application with the reference number even though it was a duplicate of the earlier online submission. since the 15K offer excluded existing MPVisa cardholders, I'm hoping either that the apps will merge with the targeted promo winning out or to cancel the 10K card, if one is issued, to skate around the exclusion of existing MPVisa cardholders (I wasn't a cardholder at the time of the application, only an applicant who couldn't withdraw the prior application due to the limitations of the system - they said to call to cancel the 10K account if one was established and the annual fee for that account will be waived).
Answer
dld-- please keep us updated if you could on what finally happens with your applications. Thanks.
As I posted on the other 20K thread, Im wondering if any existing cardmembers of the UA card were able to re-apply from scratch and get either this new 15K promo or the newer and even more lucrative 20K bonus. I have had the card for 5 months now, and would consider applying again if it works, although I have been told that they will sweep your UA account to see if you have had the initial bonus and may rule you out.
Thanks.

My wife just received the 20,000 mile offer in the mail today. Not a bad deal....pay $60, charge a $5 item, collect the miles and close out the account.

Is there no fine print on the time you must keep the account open?
Answer
MA-- did your wife already have another mileage plus card at the time she received this offer?
Answer
Sorry for the delay in reply...I haven't checked this thread in a few weeks.
Anyway, Mrs. MileageAddict received her UA Visa card in the mail today. As far as demographics, she has only 3,500 UA miles in her account. She had PremEx status back in 1998 and 1999 but now flies mostly NW with me or AA when her employer pays.
I highly doubt there is a minimum time required to keep the account open. Afterall, the $60 annual fee is not refundable. Of course, we will wait until the miles post before closing the account.

Got letter today because already had Mileage Plus Visa offering me platinum business card. 15,000 bonus miles after1st purchase, $25 discount travel certificate, and one-way 1,000 mile one0class upgrade certificate. $75 fee. Upgrade certificate only valid on paid full economy to next class of service. Sure wish they'd give me the bonus just to renew my regular MP visa, since have had it a few years. Advice?

I think there is a double miles promotion on MP Visa charges thru the end of October, so you may want to wait a while before cancelling the card.

Today (9/5) is the last day to enroll in the double miles promo.

Update: Received 2 separate cards with diff. acct. #s. Called cust svc to determine which was the 10K offer and which was the 15K offer card, then cancelled the 10K card account. Used 15K card and have since rec'd the 15K bonus miles which posted very quick. Oddly, I rec'd my first stmt and wasn't billed the annual fee. A-OK with how this worked out.

Mrs. MileageAddict was very pleased to find 20,000 new miles in her UA Mileage Plus account today. Not bad since the first bill hasn't even arrived yet...
