Question
I have read on this forum somewhere that if you have a miles earning credit card, make purchases, then transfer that balance out to another card, that you still earn miles on that money.
However, when calling Delta AMEX and United VISA both told me that you DO NOT earn miles on transfer in NOR transfer out.
Can anyone clarify this point? Thanks
Answer
You almost never get miles on a balance transfer.
I once got a special offer on my US Airways Dividend Miles Visa to get miles on balance transfer checks - but I've never seen anything like that since.

DL/AMEX is the only one I've had offer anything type of balance transfer and earn points. Late last year I received a small book of checks from AMEX with an offer that involved writing the checks for at least $15k (might have been more/less) and receiving 10k DL points. I paid off my AA/Citi cc with the checks and received 7.9% interest plus the 10k bonus points. I then received an offer from BoA/AMWest for 4.5% on a balance transfer, no miles however.

The WN (Southwest) Visa allows you to earn 5,000 "miles" (actually 5 credits) on balance transfers executed during the first 90 days.

I am currently working with an offer from CITI/AA Mastercard which gives up to 10,000 miles for balance transfers through December 2002. There is no transfer fee, but you pay interest from the day of transfer.

Where'd you find this? The interest is no problem - just pay by phone the day it hits. At most you'll be out a couple days interest + the $9.95 fee - well worth it.
Answer
It was part of my new card sign up. I accessed it by doing a balance transfer on the citicards.com website. I do not know if it is targeted for new cardholders or not.

Answer
Not miles per se, but the GM card frequently sends me offers for 5% in GM credits for balance transfers.

I have a question about mileage earning at the time of balance transfer. I thought I can still earn the miles when I paid the balance of the mileage card by the check of another credit card. Is it correct, or not?
If the balance transfer matters for earning mileage, is it possible to get a check from the credit card which offers balance transfer, then deposit to my checking account, and paid it off from my bank account check.
I would appreciate if anyone of you clarify this issue. Thanks.
Answer
I have found a balance transfer or Visa check will not offer miles, read the small print on the offer. I have had a offer that pays miles one time only...5000 miles limit.
You can pay off one Visa with a balance transfer check from another Visa....but never from the same bank.
You will get your mileage credit from the orginal Visa purchase...

What new card did you sign up for? This sounds like a great offer. Could you post all details that you have?

I think the questions/responses were misworded. If you charge a purchase on a mileage credit card, you get mileage. If you pay this balance off with a check from another credit card, the mileage card doesn't care, they got their fee (from the merchant) and they got paid by you. You keep the mileage card miles.
But the CC balance transfer is treated as a cash advance by the bank that issued the second card, so they'll charge interest immediately (as someone else noted).

If it is a large amount, it might be worthwhile - as some DEFINITELY READ THE RULES ON THE CHECKS OR TRANSFERS CAREFULLY balance transfers and "convenience" checks have a fee cap of around $50.
I recently bought a bunch of savings bonds with a mileage earning card, and transferred to a card offering 0% for 12 months. The total trans. fee was $45.

In general I think this is true. However, in addition to the above, I know the GM card earns 5% GM dollars on 1st 2 transfers within 60 days of opening account. This is a must for anyone buying a new GM car as I am. After transferring $30k, I'll get $1500 back on my Suburban and I still get my miles.

It was a standard AA singature Mastercard offer that came in the mail after I joined AAdvantage. If you go to www.citicards.com, (http://www.citicards.com,) log into your account and click on balance transfers it will tell you if you are eligible for this offer.
