Question
I keep seeing complaints about attempts to change AAdvantage cards from Visa to MC. As I may apply for one or the other, is there some reason why people prefer the Visa - I can't see any difference between them.
Answer
There is no real difference between them. In fact the MasterCard is a WorldCard and thus offers no pre-set spending limit and a few extra insurances.
I think most people complain about the switch because they have recurring payments set-up on the card and with the switch their account number changes so they have to redo the recurring charges.
If you are going to apply - get the MasterCard straight off since it will be easier. Also, I don't think that they will issue you a VISA card unless you strongly insist.

As of last night, you could apply online for either. Thansk for the other comments.
Answer
There are still a *few* places in Europe that accept Visa, but not Master/Eurocard.

I currently live in Spain but have lived in Geneve, CH and travelled all over Europe. I actually have only had the opposite expereince - would take MC but not Visa. This has only happened once or twice in many many years. I think, also, that MC is making great strides in improving acceptance. But I think there are definatly cases of both happening. But in general, acceptance is about equal.

In most areas of the world, there is little difference in acceptance, with one card sometimes more comman in certain limited cases. In total numbers of places ,Visa is slightly ahead.
The bigger issue is that it appears that Citibank is trying to have just MC as a customer.
