signing bonus for UA card?

Question
In about six weeks, I want to start accumulating miles on UA, to use for upgrades as well as awards. What are the current signing bonus miles and do I have any choices about banks/issuers?
Sylvia

Answer
The deal offered depends on what 800# you
call. The best bonus I know of at this time
is 5,000 UA miles for you, and 5,000 for
whomever refers you. I don't think you have
a choice of banks {FirstUSA}. If you need a
referral...

Answer
Last month, I saw television ads touting the Mileage Plus Platinum Visa with 10,000 UA miles as an enrollment bonus. Received the card, made several purchases and received the 10k bonus. I'm not sure if they're still running the promotion but call and ask.

Answer
The other common UA Mileage Plus bonus is the companion voucher. It's pretty good as there are few restrictions (can do circle trips, open jaws, use discount coupons on the primary fare, etc.).
If you redeem miles primarily for coach tickets, and travel with someone else, a (free) companion ticket should be worth more than 5000 or even 10000 miles.

Answer
I just signed up via an offer included in my PremEx statement. I got vouchers for a free companion ticket, free upgrade, a $25 coupon and 2,500 enrollment miles. I received another mailing to enroll the same week that did not include the companion ticket.
I used to work in the credit card business and this is standard marketing procedure. If you know the details (or better yet the name/code) of the offer you want, you can generally call up and take advantage of it even if it wasn't offered to you. You can also try sweet talking the operator and ask them what's the best offer they have available.

Just received an offer for the Platinum First USA Visa. It comes with the free R/T companion ticket, $25 discount voucher and a one class upgrade cert. No mention of bonus miles. What are the restrictions on the one class upgrade cert? Fare restrictions etc...
Thanks.

For the companion ticker offers, there may or may not be miles bonus. On the upgrade certificate, unless you are Premier or higher forget it! It's only valid on Y or B fare for non status members.
For the miles offer, my wife just received an offer for 10,000 miles, upgrade certificate and $25 coupon.

It's 800-485-9963 but I don't see any special code. Maybe BUC10474? When I called a while ago, I can able to pick between miles or companion tickets...

Do most agree that the Companion Tix is a MUCH MORE valuable incentive than the 10,000 miles if you like to travel with family?........

Unlike other airlines companion tix deals, UA doesn't have min fare restriction (at least ones I have been offered). Citi/AAdvantage have been raising the min fare on its companion tix; it was around $279 when I was first offered several years back...

The # for the 7,500 mile sign-up bonus is 800-530-8357. I beleive there is also a 1000 mile upgrade and a $25 discount cert as part of this promotion. At this time, this is the best offer I could find.

Please note that FirstUSA is now offering 10K bonus miles for new United Visa cardmembers.... so make sure you get the full 10K bonus, and not the old 5K bonus.

Gaucho100K: 10K bonus miles for new United Visa cardmembers
I've begun keeping cards I pay for for the year, cancelling, changing airlines, getting another card, for the signing bonuses. How long do I have to wait to revert back? How carefully is this all checked?

Answer
I got two UA signing bonuses only a couple years apart as I recall. The first time, I think I got a standard 5000 mile signup bonus, though I don't remember, maybe there was an extra mile thing going on. Then I cancelled after one year. Then I'm thinking no more than about 2 years later, they did the 10th Anniversary of the MP Visa, during which they definitely offered 10k bonus miles. I signed up again, and I got my miles. Got my money's worth that year, too, as they sent out a rare double-mile-earning transfer check. You only got one. I earned about 13k miles with the check. Then at the end of the year I called to cancel, and they said well, instead of cancelling, why not take this free MP *Rewards* Visa. It only earns miles at half the rate, but it has no fee. Sounded good to me. So I have gotten no bonus miles since. I'm so tired of churning cards, even if I am missing out on a few things. This was all about 5 years ago, though, so I dunno if they would be more vigilant about the duplicates now or not.
