Anybody here earning miles with no annual fee?

Question
Hi,
I am looking for a credit card with no annual fee that is offering airline miles.
If you know of one, please let me know how to get it.
Thanks,
Nebojsa

Answer
Not to my knowledge, however there is the Starwood AMEX with No annual fee and i heard you can transfer Starwood points to any airline miles with a ratio of 20,000 to 25,000 miles not bad.
Or you can get the PriorityClub Visa/MA with no annual fee, that will accumulate PriorityClub points and it can be transfered to any airline program with a ratio of 10,000pts=2,500 miles.
Hope this helps.
Al

Answer
I have a Citibank AAdvantage mastercard. It has no yearly fee and the first 6 months interest rate is 3.9%. I am also receiving 5000 AA ff miles for signing up and using it the first time. I know I found it on this site. I followed a URL. Maybe it was to Citibank or in the Advantage section of American airlines. Do a search in SPAM or Amex. I think I found it there.

Answer
Most no annual fee cards offer a reduced point accumulation, give something like 0.25 to 0.5% of purchase back. It comes in forms of FF miles, cashback, gift certificate or its equivalent.
This is compared to cards with annual fee, which often return somewhere around 2-3% So look at your spending and decide.

Answer
The CompuBank Visa card has No annual fee, and every dollar you charge earns 1 ClickMile which can be converted 1 for 1 to many airline programs. (ie: charge 1 dollar, get 1 clickmile, which can then be converted to 1 AAdvantage mile or 1 SkyMile or 1 Worldperks mile or 1 MileagePlus mile or 1 OnePass mile or 1 Aviators miles or 1 DividendMiles or 1 FlightFund mile or, finally, 1 Executive Club Mile). All of this has no charges or fees.
It is by far the best deal out there and exactly what you are looking for.
see: http://www.compubank.com/visacheckcard.cfm
p.s. - if you open the CompuBank account up through Gomez.com, they will pay you $60 to do it...

Hilton HHonors credit card by Citibank USA. Search the Hilton thread.

Answer
the American Express Delta Options Sky Mile credit card. http://home1.americanexpress.com/apply/optima/delta_options/docs/page1b0.asp?Entry=20 1 mile for every two dollars spent. 3.9% intro / then 12.9%. 60,000 mile per year limit. Not bad, but if you spend more than $500 a month, you are hurting your mileage earning by not spending a reasonable annual fee on a good card and thus getting the full milage benefits. Not to mention, with the standard Delta AMEX you get double miles ar the grocerystore, drug store, homeimprovement, cell phonebill, and gas station. Much better deal, even with annual fee factored in. IMHO.

Answer
Except for the APR (which doesn't matter if you pay off the balance), why not get a Sheraton Starwood card instead?
You get 1 pt/mile per $ charged with 1000 sign up bonus points. (The rate improves to 1.25 miles per $ charged when you transfer 20K pts). Don't settle for less.

Answer
No, that is NOT just what he/she is looking for! Nebojsa said he/she was looking for a CREDIT CARD, not a DEBIT CARD!
Who want's to have to bother with opening a bank account with them? If you plan on making big purchases (enough to get significant FF miles), you'll have to run a lot of money through that bank or make that account your primary bank account. Not worth the effort in my view.
Plus debit cards are defective products to begin with. See my last post in this thread: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum112/HTML/000075.html
Nebojsa: The "Holy Grail" that you're looking for does not exist. Better to get the Starpoints card and then also get a Citibank Hilton Visa for those purchases where you can't use AMEX.

Answer
I agree you should get the AMEX Starwood card.
I know we all shouldn't pay $$$ for credit cards, but this card is a mighty POWERFUL reason to break this rule:
.........The MBNA NEA credit card. It gives you BETTER REDEMPTION levels than any card (i.e. 10k for a free trip vs. 25 k with other cards) (http://www.neamb.com/credit/ccptrv.html). It costs $30 & miles expire in 5 years. You can also get redeem your points for HOTELS & CAR RENTAL at CHEAPER levels than ANY card out there. ALSO NO BLACKOUT DATES........if you fly a lot, you know every year, it's getting worse to redeem FF miles--less seats available, more FF redeemers, more Blacakout dates & rules...........THIS CARD IS THE MOST FLEXIBLE CARD OUT THERE W/ THE BIGGEST BANG FOR THE BUCK......DEFINITELY WORTH THE $30........
Another great card (albiet non-miles) is the NExtcard AMazon card (www. amazon.com). You get $10 for $500 spent on the card!!!! THat's twice the $$ over the Yahoo Visa or other great merchant cards!!! It's free & miles expire after 3 years.......
BOTTOM LINE:
Depending on your needs go with AMEX and one of the two OR go SOLELY MBNA! YOU WILL BE A VERY SAVVY CONSUMER FOR MAKING THESE CHOICES! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
P.S. Other good free co-branded "mileage/merchandise" cards (although not as great as the ones above for bang/buck) are: www.mypoints.com (http://www.mypoints.com) www.aria.com (http://www.aria.com) www.yahoo.com (http://www.yahoo.com) (get also this one if you carry a balance as they give pts. for balance transfers) http://www.usbank.com/cgi/cfm/creditcards/albertsons/albertsons.cfm#earn

Answer
If you are an Amazon shopper, then First USA e-Card (http://www.valueconsumer.com/fr_getdeal.cfm?DealId=48) which gives you 5% rebate may be better choice. Only downside is that the card is offered by First USA. Even though, I don't have any problem with it so far (ever since my GE Rewards card account was sold to First USA), there are complains. BTW First USA runs affinity card programs for United, AOL, Marriotts and etc.
P.S. Perhaps the better deal is to sign up for Wingspan Bank's Platinum Visa (http://www.gomez.com/deals/profile.asp?topcat_id=1&product_id=50001220&r=4&ref_Vendor_id=4810) via Gomez and get $75. BTW, Wingspan Bank is online bank owned by First USA.

Answer
The First USA e-card does have 5% BUT it's on SELECT MERCHANTS on-liNE.
I would rather go with a industry high 2% on ALLLL purchases via the Nextcard Amazon card.

Why don't you simply get a supplementary card for your husband? The fee will be cheaper. Or you can add him to our citibank account as a joint account holder... doesn't he get free CC in this case?

Answer
I second that, I have a AA Citi with $50 and my wife have the same card for free. So it is basically $25 per person.
Of course all the good miles go straight to my AAd account http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

So LH'S Senator CC with no annual fee and 1 mile per Euro still seems one of the best deals available.

That would only be a good if:
a) You are a Senator (and who is?!?!?)
b) You give a flip about Euros (and who does?!?!?!?)
c) You would want to earn all your extra miles in Lufthansa's FF frogram (who indeed!)

The idea of given the card free to top tier
is still great.

Answer
It has to do with how we do our finances. We each DO have a secondary card on each other's accounts, but his personal card is for his personal expenses and so he pays that bill. The same for AMEX starwoods. It would be far too complicated to separate out the charges every month. He has business expenses and so do I. It is so much easier to have them separate accounts.

A few comments/questions:
* Does the free LH card have an annual fee if you are NOT top tier? In other words, if you are Senator in 2001 and get the card, will it have a fee in 2002 if you don't requalify for the top-tier?
* The MBNA NEA card was discussed quite a bit in this forum a few months ago. The only problem with it is that the rules for the card explicitly state that the benefits are only available to NEA members. So far, MBNA doesn't seem to enforce this - people on this board who are non-NEA members have the card and have no problems signing up for it or redeeming rewards. Still, it's something to think about...I'd hate to have a 100,000 point balance on the day they decided to really enforce the rules.
* Amex offers a wide variety of FF miles, alternative points, cashback cards, etc. Their website explains about a dozen different options. If you like hotel points, Starwood is the way to go. If you like FF miles, Delta Skymiles is a good product. If you want a Skymiles card, they occasionally run some pretty lucrative sign-up promos.
* IMHO, the best cashback card is the Costco card - 2% with no annual fee BUT I think you have to be a Costco member, which is usually free for one year and then $55 after that.
* Does the Amazon card really give you 2% cashback on every purchase? How is the cashback paid out to you?
* The new AAdvantage cards look interesting because it's a World Mastercard. A top-tier MC with added bennies to compete with Amex Platinum (sort of) and Visa Signature.
* Someone mentioned the Marriott Rewards card a while back: $19 annual fee, typical 1-for-1 points. I like this card for one reason: you automatically have elite status with Marriott as long as you hold the card. Could be nice if you actually stay in their hotels once in a while, but don't always stay 15+ nights a year. I'm not sure if the Hilton Visa also includes this benefit, although that card sounds better it some of its other terms.

Answer
MR VISA is now $30 or $35/year.
See ongoing thread in Marriott:
"Qualifications for Gold Changed"
for current debate of the merits of that card vs Hilton's offerings!

With LH you qualify for at least 2 years (at the moment til 2/3, from March on to 2/04).
After that the card is 125DM/years if you do not rqualify.

Answer
Another option is to get the greenpoints visa (search under SPAM for the link). This will get you effectively 1 Delta/Alaska mile per dollar charged with no annual fee.

Answer
RMCCANY,
In answer to your Amazon question, Amazon gives 2% back. You get a $10 GC after you spend $500.
Your Amazon points expire at the end of 3 years.
The Yahoo card gives 1% in the form of many rewards--the best being the $25 for 2500 points at giftcertificates.com--a really good site providing a cornucopia of spending options. Plus you get Yahoo pts for reading emails and other Yahoo-related activity. You even get pts for transferring a balance (against a service charge, but you still come out substantially aheadwith a larger transfer balance).
I BELIEVE A GREAT WAY TO DO THINGS IS USE AMEX STARWOOD FOR EVERYTHING. THEN USE A NEXTCARD AMAZON FOR EVERYWHERE AMEX ISN'T ACCEPTED & OVERSEAS (SINCE ONLY 1% FX FEE IS CHARGED ON VISAS).

Answer
After that the card is 125DM/years if you do not rqualify.
See! Even YOU don't really give a flip about Euros! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
