Trailer Insurance?

Question
A friend of mine has his own truck. He is leasing to a company the pulls belly dumps for road construction.
What he wants to know is...They are requiring him to carry insurance on the trailer (it's not his). Are they trying to rip him off?

Answer
No, they are not trying to rip him off. They are trying to defer their costs to the O/O's who haul their equipment. If they didn't have him carry the insurance on his policy, they would simply pay him less money.
Another very important reason for having the O/O carry the physical damage on their equipment is that, well, he's the one driving, if he gets into an accident it is due to his negligence, or the negligence of the other party, but not the company. It's safe to say they were no where around at the time. Now, should that loss go against their policy when your friend was the one driving??? They don't think so. They want those claims filed on anyone's policy but their own.
Does this make sense? Believe me, if he wasn't paying for the use of the trailer by having to cough up the dough for insurance, he would simply be paying more, or making less elsewhere. It happens all too often.
