Question
Is a single o/o required to have worker's compensation insurance? I've had a couple of brokers short-pay on invoices or request something in writing saying that the driver opts not to have it. I need to know how to handle this. Thanks for the help.
Answer
Do you have any drivers or are you a sole-proprietor?
Many companies are beginning to require some type of "work-related accident product". This is to help prevent them from being held responsible should a driver get injured. If a contractor does not have proof of Workers Compensation and/or Occupational Accident on file, they may make a deduction for the coverage to meet the requirements their Workers Compensation carrier may have set for them.
Each state has specific requirements pertaining to when an employer must provide Workers Compensation.
However, you must know that although you may not be required by the state, you may have entered a contract that requires you to provide it. If you accept the contract, then you agree to meet those contractual requirments.
It's important to know what the contract requires from you so you can properly meet your obligations.
Hope this answers your question.
