"I'm writing to you on behalf of all the great truckers out there including myself. I drive front dump concrete truck and have to be licensed like everyone else. My question is this: Is there insurance companies out there that give discounts to cdl drivers on their own personal vehicals? If so who are they? And if not, why not? We as a group have to conform to a higher standard of driving performance every working day of our lives, and I feel that it in itself should count for something. If you could help I would appreciate it."

Answer
Your question is a good one and your logic makes sense. I only handle truck insurance and I'm not real familiar with the auto insurance as there are many auto insurance companies. But, what often happens is that truckers would like their expertise to be counted torwards a discount on their auto, but they don't want the violations or accidents in a commercial vehicle to count against it. This presents a problem and a contradiction. Over the years, most insurance companies have adopted the philosophy that the individual driver's record (whether it be personal or commercial) must be taken into account in it's entirety. It is believed that the individuals driving habits are consistent between commercial vehicle and personal vehicle.
At this time, I know of no company offering discounts as you have mentioned. However, I will do some checking and if I come up with something that may be of value, I will post it on Truck.Net for the benefit of all.
Thanks for such a good question.
