Tacoma to Alaska

Question
I trying to get a run together this summer. Running Tacoma WA to Anchorage or Fairbanks Alaska.
To do this I may need to rent a trailer. I want to know how much physical damage and the extra libility insurance that goes along with it is.
The trailer would be a 2000 model 53 foot air ride van, valued at $21,000.
Looking at April thru September time frame.
Have been talking with my insurance agent about this and he is concerned about the Alaska part.
Why does it matter where I run. Since less traffic that far north the rates should be lower.
Will this affect rates on my tractor insurance?

Answer
Any time you change your operations your insurance can change. Going to Alaska when you didn't before can make a very big change. Your tractor and trailer insurance are together, consequently any change you make will affect all your equipment. Some Ins. company's are nervous about AK because the roads are...well not very good. Also, you are traveling in unchartered territory making it a 'new' and thus, potentially stressful situation for you.
Connie eill give you good info. on your insurance I'm sure, but don't forget to check out how much the licening will cost you as well! Mel

Answer
Slow Poke
I agree with Mel. Many insurance providers are not excited about the Canada/Alaska exposure for the reasons noted.
Although, there are carriers would would write the Physical Damage for the trailer, the idea of a short term policy, is not appealing to them.
Frankly, for the few months you may be wanting the coverage, the exposure to the insurance carrier may not warrant the premium they'd collect and the cost of servicing the policy.
However, it is imperative that you be completely upfront with any agent and represent the exact description of your operation. This will help prevent any misunderstandings regarding coverage.
Also, should you get an insurance company to agree to provide coverage. Request a written quotation which specifies any and all limitations and/or warranties regarding the Canandian and Alaskan exposure.
Best of luck,
Connie
