Cargo ins.

Question
Hello Connie,
I am in need of an answer to probably a silly question. We are waiting for our ICC and are looking for some answers about cargo ins. and leasing on o/o's with their own trailers. Do I have to put them on our Cargo ins. or can they use their own. Would this cause any problems that I should be aware of?

Answer
Hi Jen,
When leasing owner-operators on a permanent basis, please keep in mind that it's still your authority and permits involved. Technically, you are always responsible to the public.
Although, the owner-operator may carry his own coverage, you may still be considered primary.
I would recommend contacting your agent regarding adding the owner-operator for the cargo AND the liability if it is your intention that he stay for a period of time. If this is a one time thing, ask your agent about adding Hired Auto with the Cargo. The Hired Auto has a minimum premium which varies by company and is auditable at the end of the policy year. This is intended to cover an ocassional O/O that you would need. But if the owner-operator is signing on for a period of months, he should be added to the policy according to the terms and condition of your policy.
Good Luck Jen!
Connie
