Question
we pay our drivers by the mile for outbound loads and by commission for backhaul loads --- we pay around $14.00 per $100.00 in wages for work comp. ------ my question is ------ our top driver does very well when he is loaded both ways --- he gets 25% commission on backhauls, when we have a good run --- he is earning over $30.00 per hour --- am I getting treated fair on my workers comp doing it this way???
Answer
Darren
Are your drivers getting a single W2 form that includes the outbound and backhaul?
Connie
Answer
yes --- the outbound is paid hourly for loading/unloading and by the mile for driving --- then backhauls are paid by commission 25% of what we charge the customer
Answer
Comp rates are state regulated, meaning the rate per hundred will be set by the state guidelines for the class of business. If your policy was secured through the state assigned risk program, there should be no difference between insurance companies.
If it was place direct to an insurance company that voluntarily wrote the policy, then you may see some benefits such as premium volume, experience modification factor, drug and/or alcohol free workplace program, etc.
While compared to some states $14.00 per hundred is high, with others it's low.
The important thing here is that your are providing the state regulated coverage for your employess.
