Question
I heard a professional comentator on the XM 171 talking about trucking companies being responsible for paying 90 days of health insurance through the cobra plan but they don't tell you that and require you to pay it yourself if you want to keep your health insurance after you quit work.
What do you know on this subject. I have looked at cobra web sites to try to confirm this but it must be top secret . Thanks
Answer
COBRA allows you to keep your current employer provided health benefits even after you quit working for them.
The catch is after quitting, you assume the costs that the employer used to pay on your behalf, so for example:
If you had employer provided benefits that cost $500 a month, of which you and the employer split (costing each of you $250 a month), after quitting you could continue the coverage without interruption but you would be responsible for paying the entire $500 a month out of pocket.
I've never heard of the employer being responsible for paying the first 90 days after you quit, but I'm not saying that isn't the case either.
