New medical card?

Question
Hi All,
I just passed my license test & applied to a small carrier.
The CDl school required us to get a medical card, which I did.
The carrier that I interviewed with is going to require me (He says it's required by law) to get a new medical card from "his" doctor. (no expense to me)
I do not particularly like going to the Doctor, nevermind one that I do not know.
So this is my question, Do I have to get a new medical card from his doctor?
Thanks, Stuck

Answer
This is not an uncommon practice and is done for a number of reasons. First of all, there are black market cards out there that are bought and filled out by the purchaser. This is usually done when the driver has a medical condition that won't pass current regs.
Another reason is that the company is required to have a copy of the long form in the driver's file to go along with the card. It is often hard to obtain this form if the physical was done by a non-company physician.
Another reason is that some company's have higher medical standards and requirements than what the DOT has mandated. This is the company's prerogative. All they MUST do is meet the MINIMUM standards as set forth in the regs. They can, however, make them stricter if they choose to. This is often dictated by an insurance carrier.
