Answer
Hey! That's great news!
On occaision we have a driver that has is pushing the limits of what the previous oral hypoglycemics could handle. We have followed the progress that has been made by many diabetics (non-truclers)using these newer oral meds vs. insulin and many are showing complete control especially when combined with diet and weight loss as you have done.
So, when we get a driver that showing signs of going over the limits of his current pills, we recommend that he speak with his primary physician about these newer meds. They have been extremely beneficial for helping diabetic drivers retain their medical certification. But you are the first that we have heard of who has come back from the "dead" so to speak.
Congratulations!
But now that you have lost some weight, shouldn't your name be "not so Fatboy"?

Answer
Nurse RED; I realize that this is an older post but I am also one that has returned from the dead as you call it. Diagnosed in 95 with diabetes, blood sugar in excess of 600 and amylase over 4800 and in icu for 11 days, I can attest that it can be done also. But I believe the real key to controlling it is to watch for the symptoms before they take over as happened with me. I am not being smart nor undermining yopu bet the best advice is to eat right and pay attention to what your body tells you. We do alot of things in this business but the one thing that we never seem to learn is that we are not superpersons. I thought that and it darn near killed me. But thanks to modern technology and good, no GREAT, health care people I am here to talk about it.
Perhaps a column by someone such as yourself on a semi regular basis explaing some of the symptoms of various illnesses we are subject to that we often overlook. Oh and by the way, lightning does strike twice in the same place. Two weeks after a recertification physical, including an ekg, I had a heart attack. This was in no way anything that was done wrong by the doctor, as she is my regular provider and the one that keeps me alive with my diabetes. Well 3days in the hospital and FOUR stents later I am back on the road. After a three week recovery period that is. The point is that things happen and only we can prevent them. Pay attention to your body as it does give you clues to what is going on. Maybe there is something to the diet and excercise thing.
Been there, Done that and took the time to learn from it.
