Question
I have recently applied for a job driving with Schneider and am going through the aplication process. My question involves the drug test that I will have to take. I had surgery done on my wrist 2 weeks ago to have a cyst removed. Beyond the anesthesia I was given I was prescribed tylonol 3 with codeine that I took for 1 week usually 3 times a day. It has been one week since I last took the tylonol and I think it will be at least one more week before I have to take a physical and drug test. The company I have applied with knows about the surgery. My question is how long do these drugs, Including the anesthesia, stay in your system and do I have anything to worry about. Thanks for your input.

Answer
You have nothing to worry about. You have been up front with your potential employer about your physician perscribed, appropriate use of narcotic pain meds. It plays out like this;
You pee in a bottle. You leave a name and phone number with the lab.
Your test shows up positive (no surprise there)
The medical review officer (MRO) recives the results. The MRO is a physician who interpets the results. (S)He calls you and asks the million dollar question, "why do you have codine in your system"?
You answer truthfully and appropriately, with perscribing doctors names and phone numbers availible.
You "pass" with flying colors!!!!
There is nothing illegal about taking perscription drugs. You can't drive if they are goofing you up (or might), but in a situation like yours, you're golden.
Always remember to tell your doctor that you drive a commercial vehicle when you are being treated. That way they can try and give you non drowsy alternitives to perscription meds when at all possible, or advise you if there are any side effects that might cause a problem.
