Question
Can anyone tell me exactly what all is checked at this physical?
Answer
If you are talking about the DOT physical you may expect the following to be standard:
You fill out complete medical histor/questionair: Discuss with your doctor anything that you're unsure of.
Eye chart exam with out corrective lenses and with corrective lenses (if you have glasses, especially if without glasses your sight doesn't meet the minimum standards berfore correction).
Peripheral vision is checked.
Visual color test.
Whisper test at about 5 feet, for hearing.
Blood sugar test.
Vital signs of pulse, respiration, blood-pressure, and temperature may be taken and measurements like weight and height.
Reflexes, flexibility, may be checked and expect to answer questions regarding any chronic (long term), or recent acute (suddenly occurring) conditions.
Medications taken on routine basis (either OTR-over the counter such as antihistamines, or prescribed (like thyroid replacement, or muscle relaxant for chronic muscle spasms, ect.).
If this is DOT physical done by your employer, you will probably be drug screened, and UA (urinylsis) done.
Additionally, some companies are now testing strength by having one lift weights of 60# over their head, as may be expected in loading, or in a given period of time move weights from one point to another......... I think some of this is beyond the normal scope of requirements for driving and controllling a truck, and performing the normal duties related to closing doors, hooking, and droping trailers, and moving tandems, and trailer sweeping.... Besides, there are tools like hammers, crow bars, pin pullers, ladders, and more to help in these tasks.
Lumping, as an option -ok , but should never be required of drivers. If so then companies aught to recruit at the warehouses----my opinion. [The very fact that a driver may complete a long haul and have to end his day lumping cargo, when he's stiff, and tired from driving, is setting him up for a likely occupational injury .] Its not that driver don't need to be physically fit, but the choice of how and when to get their fittness should not be regulated by their company..Rejoice in the LORD
