Question
I had amputation of my right leg(above the knee) in June 2005. I now have a prosthisis and have been released from my doctor.
I have 10 years good driving record with excellent safety record.
Is it still possible for me to drive OTR? And where would you suggest I start if it is? I live in Missouri and was thinking maybe CFI in Joplin since they have auto transmissions.
Please advise.
Answer
My father lost his left leg in a wreck and went back to trucking, hauling whatever out of Chicago to the West Coast and produce back to the East.
He bought a KW and rigged a cable and pulley to the clutch so he could operate it by hand, as that wooden leg was pretty heavy. I'm not sure if a company would have hired him or not. He did okay.
Answer
Yes, you can get a medical wavier to operate a CMV. You will have to send in your medical file to the medical review board in your state and they will make a determination if your qualified.
Good Luck.
